Why doesn t my Toshiba laptop recognize my iPhone 4s

First, your system must meet the minimum requirements to sync your 4S, which are:

iTunes 10.5 or laterPC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later

If it does, then check the steps in this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538, starting with #4 at the bottom (Apple Mobile Device USB driver). 

 

If, after working through the other troubleshooting steps on this guide you still aren't having success, uninstall iTunes and all of its components as by following this guide: Windows XP or Windows Vista/7, then reinstall iTunes.  You must follow this guide exactly or it will not be successful.  Note: uninstalling iTunes will only remove the application; it will not touch your iTunes library or data.
