When making or recieving phone calls i cannot hear the other person, all other sounds work fine and can only hear callers if i switch on loud speaker

make sure that the volume is up all the way.  In a call, click the + key on the left of the phone to raise the volume. If that doesnt work, go to sounds in settings, and make sure the blue bar is filled (or all the way up) to the right.  Hope this helps!

Thanks dan but this has made no difference at all, the volume is up high and the settings blue bar is at full, this has happened before and the phone retunred, they said they could not replicate the issue and returned the phone working

did you reset the phone?  Hold down both the power key and home button for around 10-15 seconds.  It should turn off and back on.
