I live in Sweden and have all this while been a big lover of apple products, until this time.i have had an iPhone 3GS for over two years now which I have been enjoying perfectly ok,I recently bought and iPad too which happen to be one of the best I device I have ever used. While I was still contemplating on trying to save money and buy the iPhone,a friend of mine in the u.s decided to save me the trouble since am such an apple freak and decided to send me an iPhone 4 from the u.s.a only for me to find out that it's locked to at&t network,I now decided to call AT&T to demand for the unlock code since its has been bought from 2010 I was told to contact apple which I did and apple directed me back to AT&T I was pushed front and back for a whole day both from apple and AT&T. It's not cheap to call from Sweden to u.s.a and I did that for a whole day just because I believe so much in apple to help out with my problem,I got mostly ****** off when one of you telephone operators told me that the only thing I can do is to jailbreak my iPhone if I want to use it in Sweden.I have never been a fan of jail breaking and now that seems to be the only option for me.As a customer of apple I believe I should be able to use apple products anywhere in the world in respective of where it was purchased so also while you try to put more strict measureses to combat hackers , we the end users should also be put into consideration I don't believe a well established company like apple and AT&T will have to lie to a customer calling all the way from Sweden. In Sweden and most European network carriers are always willing to send you an unlocking code for a fee as cheap as 50 dollars. All I do now is just come home and stare at my iPhone which is more or less like an iPod now instead.I really hope my mail will be read and acted upon.
From a heart broken customer...
A simple search of the forums or google would have revealed THOUSANDS of posts about AT&T not unlocking iPhones.
No, I did not read that horrible grammatical mess... no reason to do so.
AT&T does not and is not required to unlock devices, especially iPhones. In fact, they've won court cases which further justifies their stance.
Return the device to your friend in the states or sell it online.

Apple has nothing to do with this issue. It is AT&T's policy that they do not unlock iPhones. They're not alone, by the way; there are a number of carriers around the world that do not offer unlocking. I'm sorry you and your friend were not aware of this, but as diesel said this is widely known and the information easily available, even on Apple's web site. If AT&T told you it was Apple's responsibility, AT&T was lying to you, as is not uncommon; their representatives often blame Apple when AT&T clearly posts on their site that it is AT&T policy not to offer unlocking.
If you wanted a US iPhone to use in Sweden, your friend should have purchased an unlocked iPhone from Apple, not one locked to a carrier. At this point, there's nothing you can do, and nothing Apple nor anyone here can do to help you.
Regards.
