I would really like to know if there is a way to turn on a voice navigation tool when using the directions on the apple maps app. It is really distracting having to read the directions step by step while driving.

I dont think so! I'm pretty sure the iPhone uses a scaled down version of the Google App. But on the bright side I have read that IOS 6 comes with much better independent SatNav powered by TomTom

Currently, Apple doesn't include any app that does spoken turn by turn directions on the iPhone. As mentioned, there are apps available in the App Store that do have that capabiity. The selection will vary by country. Some are free, some cost money.
