Voicemail button not working iPhone

I have just started using a new iphone16g 3 days ago. All seems to work fine except for the voicemail function. I tap the voicemail button which lights up for a while, but nothing happens.. i.e. it does not take me to another screen. Result, I have not been able to set up a voicemail message and cannot receive same. Do I need to take the iphone back to change it, or am I doing something wrong?

Youll have to activate voicemail by calling your provider (mailbox). At least thats what I had to do with T-mobile, although I had set up my mailbox for my old mobile phone and didnt change the provider I had to go through to whole process again.
