OK, latest uipdate after 2 hours with Verizon Tech Service, 30 min. with Apple who passed me back to VZ, then 3 more hours with VZ senior tech analyst..... The VZ guy found a recent internal memo from Apple about a bug in the iPhone. Once the very first initial setup of the iPhone occurs, if the voicemail 'set up now' procedure isn't followed right then, then the setup buttom may not become available again and there is no way to trigger it to appear. Restored the iPhone completely, reset all settings, reprovisioned the VZ settings. Nothing would cause the 'set up now' button to reappear on the visual voicemail screen.
The tech said they have seen many users with this problem. They are sending me a new iPhone, he said that's the only way to fix it!!! I am fine with that since I just got my iPhone 4 weeks ago anyway. But seriously, a software bug on the phone that can't be fixed remotely or patched. I am surprised at Apple on this one.......
I had a feeling. I was on the phone again Fri eve and couldn't do anything with the Verizon people. I checked everything, reset everything, and still nothing. I am going to mention this thread when I talk to them tomorrow. Thanks for the update!
Well, it seems I am doing the same thing. Talked to 2 Verizon reps Friday, then an apple rep this morning, then just finally got off the phone with the Verizon tech department. Seems to be a software glitch in my iphone 4. They are sending me a new one tomrrow.
OMG... I am starting to boil.. I just got the replacement iphone from Fedex, sent it through activiation on itunes, and this phone is still doing the same thing. It is pointing to traditional VZ voicemail, not letting me setup Visual Voicemail. So when someone calls the phone to leave a voicemail, there is no indication on my phone that a voicemail is waiting on the old VZ system, and the Visual Voicemail interface on the phone shows nothing. There is obviously something configured wrong on the Verizon end and they don't know anything about it!!! Looks like more hours on the phone with VZ tech support with little hope
RESOLVED!! I called Verizon back for the 3rd time. Asked to be escalated to a senior network analyst. She understood my problem, and "completely reprovisioned" my voicemail service while my phone was powered off, when I powered it back on Visual Voicemail started working correctly.
On a side note.. the replacement iphone they sent me was used !! (can you believe that - certified like new), had a slight rattle when vibrating and a corner was dented like it had been dropped. I re-activated my original new phone and it too is working correctly now, so will send the replacement phone back.
All is well...
