Using iMessaging vs. Texting Overseas iPhone

Looking for some help with the functionality of iMessaging. Verizon or the Apple Store hasn't been able to really answer my question with confidence. When I have asked the question I get "it should work that way" answer.

I am traveling to Europe with my Verizon 4S phone - I will have a SIM card for phone calls, but am not planning on buying a data package plan due to the expense. I plan on using wi-fi when available.

My question is this... I know one of the benefits is that the iMessage feature sends a text as a iMessage when I "text" anyone using another iPhone (with the latest iOS software update) as long as I am connected to a 3G or wi-fi network. The benefit is that these messages don't go against your text plan.  So when I don't have a data plan overseas, a normal text will cost 50 cents per text. If I am on a wi-fi network overseas and text another iPhone user, will it still go through as an iMessage so I won't get charged for it?

Thanks.

Yes. Unless the settings are wrong, it will go through iMessage.

Texting other iPhones with iMessage using WiFi will NOT be charged as SMS or data.  However, if it goes via cell network (3G, Edge, etc.), there will be data charges which will be VERY expensive if you have no prepaid data plan. Also, some messages will go as SMS if iMeasage doesn't connect properly. To be safe:

1. Disable cell data or data roaming in settings and send/receive when using WiFi only.

2. Disable "send as SMS" to prevent iMessage from switching to SMS if the connection is bad. Some messages may not go through and this has no effect on receiving SMS or with non- iPhones.

Note that SMS text does NOT use cell data - it goes over the voice channel - though you get charged exta.  MMS media does use cell data and will be very expensive. Sending pictures by iMeasage over WiFi is free but using 3G will be as expensive as MMS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DATA PLAN.
