Updated 3G iPhone-now not operational-Error Msg 1603

I have to guess at the OS, as the phone no longer works after the latest OS update.
Performed an online update on Friday night (2/6), process halted midway, froze. Indicated full restore necessary. Attempted to restore, repeatedly. No luck. When I plug in, displays indicates it wants to connect to iTunes, but nothing happens.
Phone is toast. Any suggestions?
