I'm going to be on a 3 week international trip in multiple countries. AT&T claims they can't unlock the phone because it's not out of contract. They say that ONLY Apple can unlock the phone for my international trip.
The phone was bought direct from Apple store. Can someone from Apple provide instructions for unlocking so I can use it overseas for 3 weeks.
Thanks
This is the biggest misconseption that carriers say. It is also the falsest information given to customers and it is truly a shame that carriers advise that apple unlocks devices because they do not! Think of it this way, Apple makes the phone, a carrier buys them, enters the phone's into their networks and programs them as they please. How is Apple expected to hack into a carriers network, and unlock a specific phone for someone?
It is ENTIRELY up to the carrier and the carrier alone! here is an article that helps you find authorized carriers that unlock Apple iPhones!

if you have bought it from apple directly which means you have purchased the phone upfront then you can use it with any sim card
for eg:_ if you want to try this just try using another sim card apart from AT&T in your country to determine if it is locked, if it accepts a different sim apart from AT&T then it is not locked

Phone manufacturers can not and will not unlock phones. ONLY the carrier, in your case AT&T, can unlock it. The only part of what AT&T said that is true is that you must have completed a contract in order for it to be unlocked. So sorry, but it cannot be unlocked at all until your contract is completed. You can still use the iPhone internationally, but you must contact AT&T to set up roaming, and roaming charges are quite high.
