I have an iphone 4 that was locked to AT&T. I had it unlocked - received the 'Congratulations your phone is unlocked' message on Itunes, but when I use two of the 3 carrier sims from my country, they don't work. Only one does - which is the one I don't want. I have made many enquiries, at my Apple store, my local carrier store, forums, etc . etc., with no luck. Someone else on another forum said they'd had the same problem, and had gone from AT&T to Apple, being sent backwards and forwards. He refused to give up, and eventually the Apple person came back and said they'd taken the imei number to their 'engineering department', and they had unlocked it properly. He was so happy that it had been unlocked properly that he failed to ask what the problem had been. Then I randomly asked someone on a forum and they said it is because Apple has done a 'software unlock', and not a complete hardware unlock.
Does this sound like it could be the problem?
Ok, it seems that no-one here has any idea about this.
In the meantime, I keep on searching for an answer.
I have found a site called iphoneoperatorcheck, when you enter your imei number it comes up with details of the phone. Mine shows up that it was originally AT&T, that it is locked (which is odd considering that I got the message from iTunes 'congratulations, your phone is unlocked'), and more interestingly, that the carrier is 'Vodafone NZL'. So it is locked to Vodafone NZL. How could that be if I have never been able to access Vodafone at all, and the only carrier that this works with is 2degrees (another NZ carrier).
I'd say that it definitely is something to do with Apple, and perhaps, agreeing with someone else who had this problem, that it is perhaps that the unlock was not done properly or completely by Apple.
At this point I've asked someone on a site a question, if I don't get any joy there, I'll be ringing Apple.
I'll be back ....
