Understanding iPhone 4 and S cards.

Ive got a question about the iPhone and how it uses SIM cards/Micro-SIM or whatever it may be.
Ive been out of the cell phone game for awhile, but I do recall, years ago, I had a cellphone through Rogers (Canada). I had purchased a Motorola phone with my plan, and a few months later, I had come into possession of a newer model Nokia phone. If my memory serves me correctly, I had swapped the card into the Nokia phone and it worked just fine. Someone correct me if Im wrong on this being possible.
Now, heres whats going on in my head. Im planning on buying an iPhone 4, but Im not exactly thrilled about the plans that are forced onto the iPhone.
So, I was thinking... If I were to buy a phone that uses the same type of SIM card as the iPhone, and sign up for a plan that suits my needs better, could I then just transplant the SIM card from that phone into the iPhone and it would work as it should? Or is this all just crazy thinking?

The calling and messaging plans a carrier offers should be the same for all phones. The only difference with the iPhone is the data plan or plans that are available by the carrier for phones in the smart phone category which may or may not include a data plan or plans specific for the iPhone only.
You can take the carrier activated SIM card used with the iPhone and use it with another GSM phone.

No. You need to buy a plan specific for the iphone. Otherwise you will not get all the features of the iphone so why even bother with it. What is it you dont like about the iphone plans?

The plans here in Canada are far worse than the ones down there in the States. At least in my opinion.
Currently, my cell phone bill is roughly 30 dollars a month. Unlimited texting, unlimited web browsing, unlimited calling in Manitoba and to other MTS customers.
Unfortunately, the iPhone isnt (currently, and probably never will be) available on MTS, and also, Im relocating to Alberta soon anyways, so Im stuck with Bell, Rogers, Telus, or Fido, all of which have basically the same plans designed specifically for iPhone.
I dont make a lot of calls, but I do a lot of texting and web browsing. And the iPhone plan with unlimited text is roughly $100/month. And thats still only 3GB for a data plan. Whilst I doubt I would use 3GB in a month, Id rather not accidentally go over that and get charged up the... uhh... well, you get it.
Am I just expecting too much?

In the U.S., AT&T does not have specific calling and messaging plans for different phones. AT&Ts calling and messaging plans available are the same regardless the phone. AT&T has some specific data plans depending on the type of phone - for non-smart phones and for phones in the smart phone category.
