Unable to Enter Password iPhone 3G

On a few occasions I have had my iPhone get in a locked state when entering the device password. After entering my password sometimes the OK button gets grey but the phone doesnt unlock. I can keep typing on the keyboard but nothing registers. I have to power the phone off and on to rectify it.

No advice here? Is my 3G a dud? Should I wipe it clean and start fresh with factory software? Should I deep fry it? Any reasonable suggestions will be considered.

Page 34 iphone manual:
If something is not working right, restarting or resetting iPhone will likely solve the
problem.
Restart iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and
hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Reset iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the
same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
For more troubleshooting suggestions, see Appendix A, “Troubleshooting,” on
page 132.
