With the device connected to itunes go to file-transfer purchases.  Also seeDownloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

thanks so much, it took me a while but i got there in the end. i dont suppose i can save the songs i had on there before i updated to ios4 can i
