Just got an iPhone 4 for me and an iPad 2 for the family so we can use FaceTime when I travel. However, weve had a lot of trouble getting it to work properly.
Family is connecting at home via AT&T FastAccess DSL. Ive tried at two different Starbucks using the free AT&T WIFi there.
Tried it for the first time yesterday, and FT was completely unusable. Had a hard time connecting, and when I did connect, my camera appeared to freeze as my image in the teeny window stopped moving. And the connection only lasted 10-15 seconds before we got disconnected (FaceTime failed). This happened several times and we gave up.
Tried it again at a different Starbucks today, thinking maybe the first Starbucks WiFi was overloaded with users and the throughput was weak. It was better, but not great. Actually held a call with my son for about two minutes. Video was choppy and audio was breaking up here and there, but we did hold a call for a while. But then the freezes got longer and we started getting disconnected.
Nothing appears to be wrong with either device, although my wife mentioned that when we got disconnected on FT, it looked like her iPad had disconnected from our home WiFi signal and she had to reconnect.
Im not sure where to start with this. Im wondering if my DSL at home is just slow and needs to be amped up to the fastest speed tier of service. Or maybe Starbucks WiFi just isnt good for FT use?
I was going to use that FaceTime toll-free test number to see if I could get a good session connected somewhere besides my house, the idea being that a good FT session would rule out my iPhone and my connection as the problem. But that test number appears to be inactive, so I thought Id try to post here before I got on the line with tech support.
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
