Texting woes Help iPhone

I recently purchased an iPhone 3g. I pay for the five dollar texting plan, and can text most people just fine, but the person I text the most whenever I try to text them it kicks me back a message stating: Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number of valid short code. But I can receive texts from them. Is this an AT&T thing or an iPhone thing? Ive been able to text her back once. has anybody else had this problem

all phone numbers being texted to should be as follows for example, 8185551212 you can also try 18185551212

Ive deleted the contact and re-entered it in pretty much every possible configuration, 1+area code+ number, area code+Number, Number alone. It really makes no sense to me.
