As mentioned, there is no MMS (the ability to text pictures) on the iPhone.
There are workarounds as there is no telling if they will ever add it.
For me I can send pics to my daughter on her non iPhone and she can send to me.
The process is this:
First (though you already know) discover the persons cell carrier.
Then if it is one in the list below you should be able to email a picture to them and they can get it as an MMS on their phone.
If you do not see them on the list, then have that person add your EMAIL address to their addressbook on their phone (just about all allow this). Though they should still add your email address to contacts for later use even if you skip this because you see the carrier in the list below.
Then have them start to send an MMS as normal but when it comes to them picking where to send, have them pick you EMAIL address from their address book.
Cells can send MMS to email addresses.
Now that they sent to you, when you check your email on the phone and get the picture (may take a little time) you now have in the From line, their MMS EMAIL address to send back to. Add that address to your contact info for that person.
Now when you want to send pics to them, email that address. And they can reply as well and they have to remember when sending to you, to choose your email address instead of phone number from their contacts.
Short list of some common carriers.
