Texting not working properly. HELP iPhone

Well Ive been having problems texting (mainly with Verizon), my texts are arriving late and/or am receiving them late. Sometimes even hours. I went to the att store where they were absolutely no help. The guy didnt know what I was talking about. It works well when it wants to but most of the time it doesnt. I send at least 100 texts per day so this is extremely frustrating. Please help!
*Ive been with att for years so my number did not come from another carrier.

I have an iphone and my nephew has Verizon. This used to happen, but I asked him to update his Verizon phone - *228 option 2 - and it has been working much better.
I dont if this will help you, but it seemed to help in my case.
