Texting from US to UK iPhone

I have an original iPhone 2.1 and I was wondering if I was able to text someone in the UK from America? I originally live in America so Im not traveling or anything, I just dont know how to go about texting someone outside of the country.
If I can, how do I? How much does it cost extra? And will that show up on my phone bill, that Ive been texting out of the country?

you should probably pose this question to your wireless provider.

Dont know but you can do a Google search or call your provider. After a quick Google search I found many listings such as:

Perhaps you can find a helpful one, if you are unable to reach your wireless carrier.
