My Open Letter to Steve Jobs Apple iPhone 3G

Dear Mr. Jobs,I wish to congratulate you in your ability of rejuvenating the Apple brand over the past decade. The first computer my family ever purchased was an Apple IIc. My school computers were always Apple hardware. However, for most of my adult life I’ve been a PC and never owned a post iMac Apple product but always envied those around me. When I have to work in the Computer labs on EKU Campus, I choose Mac. Because of this long distance love affair, I received my first iPhone as a gift, and my view of Apple as a company and a brand has dramatically changed. In 2007, I was given an iPhone (8 GB) for Christmas from my wife; she had been secretly saving for the purchase for several months. Much to her chagrin, it failed to work out of the box. She cried and apologized all day. The AT&T store said that it was a SIM Card reader issue. When the store manager called Apple Customer Service, they explained that I had to return the phone directly to Apple with a turnaround time of approximately 10 business days. The store manager did not understand why this was necessary when they had iPhones in stock. He chose to replace the original, even though it was not company policy (January 2008).This iPhone was wonderful and I showed it off to all of my friends, family, and co-workers. However, it began to develop yellow and green streaks on the screen and air bubbles under the glass plate. When I took the iPhone to the Apple store in Knoxville, they apologized and happily replaced it (March 2008). Its replacement developed air bubble issues and I continued to use the phone until it was unresponsive (September 2008). I returned this phone to the Knoxville store as well and was given a replacement. Both of these phones were given to me without a box and it is my impression that they may have been refurbs or returned phones that had been restored to factory settings within the store. My fourth iPhone began to have syncing issues, App refresh issues, and crashes with the OS 2.2 update. These problems continued with the 2.2.1 and 3.0 updates, it also developed air bubbles. After contacting Apple Customer Service, I was able to solve the problem, only to have them begin again after approximately 13+ usage hours. Frustrated by these failings, my wife and I called; then, emailed Apple Customer Service with a letter similar to this one. At that time, my wife received a call during the day, and she was made aware of the fact that none of the previous issues had been reported by the Knoxville store. In addition, the Apple records did not have my current phone shown as being used by an AT&T customer. Their response to the issues was a iPhone 3G replacement that would cost me an additional $99 because the old one was out of date. My wife agreed not knowing that I had this same option available through an AT&T upgrade. I returned my iPhone Edge to Apple; since, my wife had agreed to the trade and it did not change my upgrade schedule with AT&T. However, I was disappointed in the fact that up to this point, my wife had spent $600 on my iPhone and I had yet to receive a device that worked. I mentioned this to the Customer Service rep and she seemed genuinely concerned but did not offer any additional reimbursements. When I received my current iPhone 3G last June, It worked well and I was extremely happy with the OS 3 updates. However, with each update since the original, I have had to reinstall USB drivers on all three of my computer. Starting in April 2010, after an update, my iPhone 3G no longer registers as a camera on any of my computers. I have reinstalled USB drivers and completed two restores. The first restore was required because of an attempted/failed sync that sent the phone into a cycle of unstoppable refreshes once the phone was unlocked. (I lost approx. 150 photos of my daughter as a result of this restore.) The iPhone continued to freeze and refresh unexpectedly; so, I completed another “successful” restore.Currently, the iPhone will sync with iTunes but still does not show as a proper camera. I have reinstalled all Apple software; however, this has not solved the problem. In addition to the sync/download issues, streaming podcast via wifi has become a consistent problem. It will crash 7 out of 10 times while streaming on my home network. I choose this option because I try to save space for pics since I cannot currently download onto my computer. I must say that my frustrations with the iPhone have begun to ware my patience with the device and Apple as a brand. Whereas, I use to taut the abilities of my phone and the Customer Service, now I’ve become unimpressed and repeatedly lowering my expectations of performance. The convenience of being able to share digital pictures of my daughter with her grandparents has been wonderful. When it works, it is a great tool; I even convinced my in-laws to buy one. Yet the most disheartening thing was a comment my wife made after we watched the Keynote last week. She said, “What? I can’t believe they have a better phone already. Isn’t that a fourth upgrade or something? I feel like such an idiot for spending $500 on a phone that has never really worked. I should have waited.”Now, I am wondering why I even want to keep my phone. As it stands I could walk into to AT&T get a free phone, reduce my monthly phone bill, and just run my iPhone 3G like an iPod Touch that sort of works. I understand hardware limitations often restrict software ability. Does this mean that Apple anticipates making their devices obsolete within two generations? If so, why were we not told this? I want to be a loyal Apple consumer. I even had visions of using my awesome iPhone as way to convince my wife that we should become a Mac family. Yet, my history with this device and the current view of consumer bounce-back on iPhones, begins to worry me. As of right now, I don’t know if I want to upgrade to a new iPhone 3GS let alone 4. It seems like I would just seem gullible when the next one no longer works. Part of me says cut my losses, wait out my family plan contract with AT&T, and go somewhere else. Maybe, after the iPhone 6 or whatever comes out, enough of the kinks will be fixed, and it will be worth my money to purchase again. However, the rest of me, remembers writing DOS code on my family’s Apple IIc and watching the floppy disk boot. Those moments changed my life. I’ve been using and teaching with computers ever since.________________________________________________________I have contacted/emailed Gizmodo, iLounge, Engadget, TUAW, and Macworld hoping to generate a response or at least some answers about the quality control issues I mentioned in my Open Letter to Steve Jobs. Since writing the letter (06-14-10), I have completed three full restores, all of which were backup from February. The first one was prompted by an iTunes download glitch. I attempted to download two podcasts, the downloads failed and wiped my entire music catalog off of the iPhone. So I decided to restore to a previous backup. While using the first restore, I belieive I may have found one possible solution to the camera issue. Picasa may be deleting info packets as it deletes pictures after downloads. I attempted to download some random pics as a test for the now working driver; then, deleted them using Picasa, like I’ve done in the past. Immediately afterward the computer no longer recognized the camera. After a second reboot (again the February backup) no problems until Itested the camera driver and it happened again. Hence a third restore was necessary. The third time I used the Windows Photo Gallery manager and deleted the pics using the iPhone, no problems. It seems to be working now, but at least three phone calls were bumped directly to voice-mail during the day, two before and one after the restores. This has been a newly recurring event since about mid-May but is starting to occur more often now. This is my fifth iPhone and all have had some kind of issue; bad SIM card reader, air bubbles, color streaking, or as mentioned above, repeated software crashes. Its not jailbroken nor have I ever attempted that process. Could anyone at your site tell me if my horrible history with the iPhone is close to common or radically unlucky. I am thinking about updating from a 3G to the 3GS using the Radio Shack trade-in credit but am very skeptical of what I might get in return.__________________________________________________________________________It has been a month since my first set of emails went out. Yesterday, I went to the new Apple Store/Genius Bar in Lexington, KY and was told that they would order me a replacement. I dont know for sure if this will be a new one or a refurb but am skeptical. I am also wondering if it comes out of the box with iOS4 does that mean Apple is knowing hardware with faulty software. Could this be a suable offense or simply a bad business move. My deepest concern is the fact that my original letter sent to Apple has gone unnoticed.I guess what I am trying to say is, what can anyone tell me that would give me hope to stay with Apple? iPhone 3G iOS 4 PC Laptop

How I set my iPhone 3G up when Ive switched from MacBook to PC

Ive recently switched to the dark side and purchased a Dell XP Netbook as Im off travelling soon and I wanted something smaller and lighter to take with me. I use an iPhone 3G and I have no idea how I go about setting up iPhone 3G with my new Netbook. Im not concerned with the music sync as copying my music and creating a new library on the PC will be easy enough, my concern is with my iPhone settings and content, i.e. text messages and content. Do I just need to accept that Ill need to start from scratch when I start using the iPhone 3G with the Netbook or is there a way of moving core files from MacBook to Netbook? Any help of advice would be great. Thanks!! Dell Netbook

Cant get my iPhone back on 3G

Hi —Im trying to find out what happens when an iPhone is disconnected from its mobile operators network, when a contract is terminated or the number is ported across to another phone. I have a company iPhone which I need to give back as Im leaving the job. Before I gave it back, I wanted to sync it so I could delete all the music, photos and apps from it. Unfortunately when I was trying to sync, iTunes seemed to hang for ages with a spinning beach ball. So I force quit iTunes but it happened again, so I force quit again and then unplugged my iPhone. It wouldnt respond so I tried to restart it. Now all I get is the silver Apple logo on a black background for about a minute, then the screen goes black. What I want to know is this a problem with the phone because of the iTunes crash or is it because the phone has been disconnected from the mobile operator?Any help appreciated. Thanks. iMac/24inch/3.06Ghz/10.5.8 + Powerbook/15inch/867mhz/10.4.11

iPhone 3G upgraded to iOS 4 Not happy Theres downgrade for you

Like a lot of people Ive been really disappointed by the amazing piece of crap my iPhone 3G became after upgrading to iOS 4. Unresponsive... Buggy... Bla... Bla... Bla...For those who chose the wrong pill like me, theres a way to roll back to iOS 3.1.3 quite easily. Of course the solution is not provided by Apple... Of course you will loose all your custom settings and sms.Have it synchronized on your Mac first to have all your pictures, ringtones, apps, contacts, music copied on your Mac.Go to http://www.sebby.net/595-downgrading-from-ios4/ to have the full story and to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ to get your 3.1.3 firmware.Happy downgrade! I get a fair number of telephone spammers, I guess because I have landline calls forwarded to my iPhone. So I set up a Contact called Spam and set the ringtone to crickets, so when I hear it I know its spam. Then every time I get a spam call from a new number I add that number to the Spam Contact. Ive got about 50-60 spam numbers in that entry. Is there a limit to the number of phone numbers I can add to one Contact? Is there any way to silence an individual Contact so theres no ring and no vibrate? iPhone & Macbook Pro iOS 4

iOS4.0 Stops Certain Videos Playing iPhone 3G

OK so my 3G would play all the music videos I had on it with 3.1.3 but when Ive upgraded to 4.0 I find some that iTunes 9.2.1 wont sync as it says theyre the wrong format even though previous versions of iTunes were fine and they played on the 3G. I also find that some of the videos that iTunes 9.2.1 will sync, dont actually play any more on the 3G - I get an unsupported format error when clicking on them.So it looks like Apple tightened up the checking in 9.2.1 but didnt get it right matching that with 4.0.1, and neither of them is correct in terms of matching the hardware.Im now left with videos that used to play but dont any more. Im putting in a bug report directly to Apple, but Im left very disappointed with the way Apple has handled the 4.0 upgrade. Anyone else having these sort of problems? iOS 4.0.1 making my iPhone 3G way slow

Hi,I Recently updated my iPhone 3G to new 4.0.1 it. Of course happy to see new things but could not remain same for even a day. As updated with backup, music and application it started slowing down like ****. even though it got plenty of space vacant like almost 10 GB free out of total 14.56 GB.Whenever any application needs to open, will take almost 8-12 seconds whereas before it was hardly 1-3 seconds thanks to 3.0.3 the problem is so measure nowadays iPhone even cant screen the call as well. it started showing unknown caller for two rings then it will show number respectively. Hope fully Apple will take this problem seriously because it geting my nerves to loose my temper...., so do others !Anyone knows how to get back from 4.0.1 to 3.0.3 will appreciate. solution for problem for the same are welcome, please advise.Message was edited by: Dinesh_K iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0.1 iOS 4 Mac OS X (10.6.4)

iPhone 35 not syncing with iTunes 9.2

I was just gifted a hand-me-down 3G iphone. I tried to sync it and I was told I needed to upgrade my itunes. So i did -now I am running 9.2.4.1.The iPhone doesn't have the most recent upgraded software because I hear it has problems. When I try to sync it freezes my itunes. I check back and the apps are synced -but not the music or videos. I have them set to manual and I try to do a manual transfer and it just hangs up.Also the charge doesn't seem to work on the computer -with or without itunes -although someone suggested it works while the phone is off.HELP! I'm a total newb!!

How I back up media on my iPhone 3G

Apologies if this is too obvious. Up until now Ive never used iTunes to sync my music with my iPhone. My mac doesnt have a lot of spare HD space, so I didnt want to use up 10-15GB in duplicated data. Right now Ive realised (like everyone else) that iOS 4 delivers almost no benefit to 3G owners, but comes with a big speed penalty, so Im thinking about upgrading back to 3.1.3. The problem is that I know this will delete all the music from the 3G, and reloading from individual disks is a very tedious process.Question is, can I reverse-sync my 3G with iTunes? By that, I mean can I transfer all the music on my 3G back to iTunes? PowerBook 17" Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Messages app launches and closes after 10 seconds iPhone 3G

HiI have an iphone 3g bought from ebay (france) about a year ago. I bought it unlocked and had a friend help jailbreak it (I was told it was necessary) to make it work in my home country (Cyprus). My wife has been using it since then with no problems (mainly for simple phone calls).Today I switched SIM cards and inserted my SIM card in the phone to use for a few days. It worked fine for a few hours and suddenly the text messages app (not mail) does not work (all other apps seem fine at the moment). I tap the messages icon, it launches a blank white screen with no messages in it (even though it had messages a few hours ago) and after 10 seconds it goes back to the home screen. I can receive texts and if I click reply and then cancel the reply or tap on the messages button from the reply screen it takes me back to the list of old messages that were on the phone before this problem started. However, if I go back to the home screen from there, and tap the messages icon again, it displays the same problem.I tried putting the original SIM card back in.I tried turning off/on.I have tried hard reset (home button and power button simultaneously)....and the problem persistsI asked at one of the apple stores but as soon as they saw that the phone was jailbroken they said they could not do anything. Fair enough, but I still want to have a working phone...Can anyone help? I am unsure as to whether I can restore/upgrade and all that, as the phone is jailbroken. There is no real data on it that I care about losing. Almost empty. All my contacts are on my macboook anyway and all the photos have been imported to iphoto. There is no music on the phone that I dont already have elsewhere. Some details about the phone:Software version: 3.0I was told to be careful not to click install new software when connecting to iTunes as that might cause probs. Thanks in advance...Also I am not a techie so be gentle!! apple even acknowledging all these problems iPhone 3G

Im very frustrated as the update has been a complete nightmare. Wish i hadnt done it. Has to restore computer and phone which took me days to rebuild after over 3 hours on the phone with apple reps. lost so much and now my phone is slow, crashes constantly and over 3/4 of PAID and free apps do not work. grrrrrrr does anyone know if apple is owning up to how badly they screwed our phones up? i paid top price for this and after all is said and done, phone, activation, mandatory monthly data fee, accessories, music lost several hours on phone with tech support, letters and emails, three days without even a phone, prob 30+ hours to halfway rebuild computer and phone equals thousands of dollars and days wasted. WAS going to buy an apple comp this fall but now dont know since they are so snooty and condescending. iPhone OS 3.0

Synching data from iPhone 2g to iPhone 3g

I am attempting to transfer my friends data (contacts, music, texts, pictures, etc.) from an old iPhone 2g to an iPhone 3g on her laptop. iPhone 3GS wont ring

For the record: I dont think my dilemma has anything to do with the new iOS4 update. Recently my iPhone has been acting a bit odd. You know the little switch right above the volume buttons? The one that if you switch it, it shows a bell. Silent or ring. Well, a couple of days ago (about 2 days) after turning my phone back on, the little bell symbol randomly came up and was flashing on and off. This all happened without me touching the actual switch. After all that happened, when I went to switch the silent/ring thing, nothing came up. It just stayed the same. Now theres no sound. I can play music aloud. I can play a ringtone aloud. It just wont play on its own. If I receive a call, I wont hear it. If I receive a text, I wont hear it. The keyboard wont even click anymore Ive checked the settings. Ive turned off my phone multiple times. Nothing works. Please help! : Jay iPhone 3GS (16 GB / White) iOS 4

lost Ipod Remote Bluetooth stability slow and phone reboots with IOS43G iPhone

I just recently downloaded the 4.0.1 updated hoping it woud fix many of the issues I had after installing IOS4.0. Since installing the OS I have lost (I have verified these same issues on my wifes phone so it is not HW specific) the following functionality with my 3G:1) I can no longer start my Ipod from the remote clicker on my head phones. If the IPOD applicaton is running it will start and stop fine, but it used to start playing music even if the IPOD app wasnt active. 2) Bluetooth seems very instable. I have had it disconnect occasionally during calls but can restore the connection if I select the device again.3) several applications take a very long time to load. If we dont reboot our phones avery 5-7 days, eventualy text and other applications will crash on launch until I reboot. THen the phone is snappy again for about a day. (memory leak??)4) 3 times on my phone and 2 times on my wifes phone while usingit (all three of mine have been using the built in text message app) The phone has re-booted (more than 50% full battery) I erased my text message history and no improvement/change.5) Google Maps takes forever to show my location on the map and initial guesses at my location seem to be off by 100s of miles (before it would narrow in on my location over the first 10 seconds, but it now takes 30-40 seconds and seems to not even know which side of the city I am on anymore...)A few other things but not sure how repeatable they are, but the experience so far has been very frustrating... I have heard of other issues with IOS4, but havent seen some of these issues. And now my questions..A) Is there a way to downgrade to 3.1.3 or other via I-tunes (dont want to jailbrake the phone) or know if/when and update will be available to address some of these issues? B) Is the iphone4 having similar issues (or is this 3g specfic)?C) Any tips to fixing any of these issues? (I tried turning off all notifications as was in one post but it didnt help as they are already off..)Message was edited by: Rhinokerr Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Syncing error-wont sync music and every back up hangs. iPhone 3G

I have a number of concurrent issues.Upgrade to OS 4.0.1 will not complete restore component. Had to take to apple to restore restore the phone. Then when I went to restore my back up, it loads OK, but still hangs after back up - will not complete the sync.Have to slide to cancel - or it times out if I leave it.In addition every back up will not allow me to sync music. The end of the syncing seems to be the issue.have received errors (-20) and 9 in various attempts.I have 2 phones, with same issues. Is it itunes latest version or something else in my PC? I have disabled antivirus and re-installed itunes. Can anyone help? 3G phone OS 4.0.1 Windows XP

HELP iPhone 3G

I just followed the Apple instructions for iOS4. In the middle of it, the found new hardware message came up and then said it was restoring my original data. I DONT WANT the original data, I want all the stuff Ive added. Now for the past 1.5 hrs, the phone just has a picture of a CD with a blue music note in the middle of it. Below the pic it says Itunes. It has a picture of the end of the white cable pointing toward the picture of the cd. Below that it has slide for emergency in every language imaginable. I just want my phone back! Well I plugged my iPhone in because I seen some stuff on here about yet another update, and since I already basically quit using my iSlow...iPhone I mean, why not update it again!Ill post back my results!I still just cant believe how Apple really is, I never cared for Macs really, im a PC guy, but when it comes to my music portability, im all about iPods/iPhones, and I thought for sure theyd address the issue and allow everyone an upgrade back to the previous iOS.

iOS 4 iPhone 3G

I have had my iPhone 3G since the week they came out. I have loved it every second ive been on it, never had but maybe a couple times of having an app crash or a random shutdown.I read the whole feature list for 4 and got so excited, downloaded it, waited like 3 hours for iTunes to back my iPhone up and was so happy when it was done. But now almost 2 weeks later, I HATE IT. Words cannot describe how close ive been to throwing the ****** out the window when im in the car, or dodging it at the wall when im home or in a store.(Im huge on music, never go a car trip without having music played from the iPhone through my stereo) Now when I click iPod it takes upwards of 15-30 seconds before anything happens after the black screen, and then another 8 second delay just to play the song after I clik on it.Anytime im online now (WiFi) checking my email/facebook/myspace ETC, it ALWAYS takes FOREVER to open the app, and then forever again to become functional. Ill be checking my short texted emails and ill swipe my finger to scroll down, and literally it will freeze up for upwords of 30 seconds again. The new update makes the 4 main icons look better, but honestly IMO thats all it does. and thats not worth it to have horrible response time for everything else.I also notice my battery dies like nothing now, even if I dont use it much!(I dont use mine with an AT&T contract, I just use it like an iPod Touch, but I like the thickness better, and camera/mic and having the headphone jack on top)Anyone else having these horrible issues? What the **** can I do!?

iOS4 bluetooth functions not working properly iPhone

Hello there, I have the iPhone 3Gs and it is updated with the iOS 4.0.1. The problem Im having is that, not all of the bluetooth functions are working properly as it used to before, and I wanted to know if there was away of letting Apple know about it so that it could be fixed. I believe its just a software issue, where there is a delay in conncetivity from phone to headset, but Im not sure. I own the new, Jawbone Icon and it used to work fine before Ive updated to the new iOS 4.0. Ive tried doing a total rest with both iphone and bluetooth and both methods were unsuccessful. Ive actually tested my bluetooth headset with another iPhone, that still had the previous iOS 3.1.3 software, and it worked exactly how it should compared to my updated iOS 4.0.1 iPhone. The main problem I have is that for one, I no longer hear my phones message tone in my headset when I recieve a text message, push notification, or even email to my iPhone. Before, with the iOS 3.1.3 software, I would alway here my message tone when I recieve any of those notifications. Which was convinient when I had my phone in my pocket and was in an area where I couldnt hear my phone when I recieved a message. The other problem I have is that, while my phone is ringing, I would hear my ringtone through my bluetooth while the caller id function was being read to me. This was a little distracting at first, but not too much of a problem. The problem is, when my phone rings and my Jawbone reads back to me the callers number - when I pressed the sleep/wake button to slients my phone, it would also cancel the caller id function that my bluetooth offers. This was a little inconvinient, especially while I was driving. In the state the I live in, while driving, the driver is not allowed to talk on their phone unless it is connected to a bluetooth device. Which is the reason why it would be the reason why i enjoy the caller id function provided by Jawbone. If there is anyone that could help me with this problem, or possible help me find a way to send this to Apple, I would greatly appreciate it. If anything, I believe that the new iPhone iOS 4.01 software has a slight delay on their bluetooth connectivity from phone to headset. But, nevertheless, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!Yung Vibe PC iOS 4

Sync wout S Card iPhone 3G

I just got my Iphone 4 and sold my dad my old 3g. He currently live in a ATT area, but will be in the near future. He wants to sync the phone with his account and utilize the Iphone as a touch until his relocation. I have removed my old sim card and stored it, and while he was trying to sync the phone he wasnt allowed to connect without the sim card. My questions...1)If I provide my old sim card (i trust him), will he be able to sync the phone to the computer and his Itunes account so he can purchase applications, music, etc.2) If my old sim card doesnt work, can he utilize a ATT pay as you go for the next 90 days prior to his relocation. 3) What am I missing or should I know about this whole process? Thanks Iphone 3g iOS 4

Cannot transfer purchases made on iPhone 3G to maciTunes

My iPhone 3G is not able to sync anymore. Ive been in a loop for hours. Basically Ive purchased apps and music on my iPhone using the same user id and password that I use on my mac iTunes. When I connected the iPhone to transfer purchases to back them up I get a window stating that I cannot transfer the purchases because the computer is not authorize, so I go to authorize this computer and input my log in manually (not using the cookies) and the mac tells me that the computer IS authorized so I go back to transfer purchases and it starts all over again. Ive been trying to back up for months, now Ive amassed 32 apps and songs that Ill have to either buy again or loose if I have to restore. (I know I should have stopped buying on the iPhone when I first realized the problem.)What am I doing wrong? If there are discussions already open that I should look at let me know. Thanks! iPhone 3G iPhone OS 3.1.3

Okay, listen everyone, I need and hopefully whoever besides me is having this problem will have their question(s) answered. My problem after upgrading to iOS4 is that my custom ringtones and music are not properly being synced to my phone from Itunes. It shows that my ringtones and music are synced to my phone and when I go to Settings/Sounds to locate my ringtones, it shows that they are there but doesnt play the ringtones after clicking on the desire one. As for my music, after clicking on the iPod icon and waiting for my phone to update my playlist(s) I get the message that there are no contents. I have tried to resolved this issue with Apple Support and to no avail. Please anyone who out there is havong this same problem help. Desperately looking for some advice and keep in my mind that I have several restore to fix this problem and nothing has helped. Feel free to ask any questions.... PC Windows Vista

iPhone Back-up problem 3G

Good day to you all Im having problems upgrading to the latest O.S 4 software for my iPhone because the back up process fails. It happens in the middle of syncing. What happens is that I get a error message Mobile Backup has generated an error and needs to close every time I plug the usb in and it starts to back up so i have to close it... It does sync and back-up on my laptop though but I am worried that I might lose all my files if I upgrade to the latest software on a different computer to the one where I loaded all my apps and music. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes on my PC and still the same thing happens. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks very much, Michelle iPhone OS 3.1.3
