Hi Folks, Does the iphone 4 (not 4S) support WiFi tethering or would I have to use USB cable? Can't use Bluetooth tethering as laptop doesn't have bluetooth! Cheers RB

Personal Hotspot iphone 4 disabled by previous GSM operator

My current operator allows and has included in my plan cellular internet tethering. (I had used their services on this device before as well). I have switched to another service provider (O2 - UK) at some point, and they have somehow disabled my personal hotspot option via a "Network Settings" message they have sent when I first switched over. Now I am back with my old GSM operator, but their support center does not know how to re-enable the option on my phone. The "Set Up Personal Hotspot" button in the "Cellular" tab is grayed out and cannot be used right now. I am already on 6.0.1 and cannot update the iOS. Tried resetting the Network settings several times - it does not work. I really do not want to revert back to factory settings - lots of things to lose.. I just thought I'd also ask here as well. (By the way I can insert my SIM to other devices and they can tether the internet, so the trouble is really in the device) I would appreciate any help.Thanks.

iphone 5 Personal Hotspot much slower than iphone 4 3G vs LTE

I have an iphone 5 now but the internet is a lot slower while using Personal Hotspot than it was when it was called "tethering" on my iphone 4. I can't watch Youtube, etc. It takes too long. LTE just over all doesn't seem any faster than 3G. I'd prefer to use 3G most of the time. ANd it seems like iphone 5 will not allow me to use Personal Hotspot with 3G. Only LTE. Am I the only one who experiences this?

iphone 4/4s iPod/iPod2 unlock and jailbreak

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 used to connect perfectly to iphone PersHotspot but has suddenly lost ability.

I'm not positive, but I am fairly sure it was the update to the Tab that caused the tethering function to become inoperative. Unfortunately I updated the iphone soon after...and I acknowledge that it might have been that. In any case, it used to work perfectly - I used it alot - then it wouldn't work. It connects immediately...with a strong signal...and it *appears* to be assigned an IP address by the iphone...but it won't surf. The iphone can surf fine by itself. The Tab can surf fine by itself (when using home or public Wi-Fi)I reset the network settings in the iphone (which to my immense annoyance did not help)I've tried many times to "forget" and re-connect to no avail.I renamed my iphone to remove spaces & punctuation marks (no difference - and was not a problem before)Have tried to tether via BT; devices *will* pair, but iphone says they are incompatible and aborts the connection. Ideas please?

iOS 6 with 4s tethering Issue-WiFi Network Can't be Found

I have a 4s and after upgrading to iOS 6, I can turn on the Hotspot, and it works with Bluetooth and USB, but it doesn't seem to be broadcasting over wifi.  I've trired multiple hard resets, resetting network settings, turning on and off Hotspot tons of times.  But the netwrok still isn't being broadcast so I can't connect over WiFi from computers or any other devices.  Anybody else out there experiencing this or have a solution?

Use AT T US unlocked iphone 4 in India

Gurus,  I have an iphone 4 which has been unlocked by AT&T as I am up with my contract. I am planning for a vacation to India and have a couple of questions.  1) When I got a confirmation from AT&T on my unlock request and I completed the restore, I got a message through iTunes restore saying "Congratulations, your iphone has been unlocked". I know the phone should be unlocked but is there a way to confirm this before my trip to avoid any surprises.2) What carriers are iphone supported and whether I'll be able to get 3G with data and tethering(if possible).3) Are there any other tools that I need from US on my trip? Like micro SIM card cutter?  Thanks in advance,  lazydba

Can't access Personal Hotspot over Bluetooth with another iphone

I have an iphone 4S, running iOS 5.1.1. (Though this issue has existed since 4.3) I enable Personal Hotspot on the iphone. Bluetooth and Wifi are turned on. My iPad 2 (running iOS 5.1.1) sees the iphone in the list of available Bluetooth devices, connects to the iphone, and voila! The iPad is tethering my iphone's internet connection. When the two disconnect from one another (like when I leave the house). I simply pick up the iPad when I return, go to Settings>General>Bluetooth and tap my iphone in the list of available devices, and (as long as my iphone is within range) the iPad connects, and I'm online again. Painless! The problem arises when I try to connect my iPod touch or spare iphone 4 to the Personal Hotspot of my iphone 4S via bluetooth. I enable Personal Hotspot on the iphone 4S. Bluetooth and Wifi are turned on. I pick up my iPod touch. Bluetooth is enabled, but the iphone 4S does not appear in the list of available Bluetooth devices. I pick up my spare iphone 4. Bluetooth is enabled, but the iphone 4S does not appear in the list of available Bluetooth devices. The problem is, if I want this iPod touch or spare iphone (acting as an oversized iPod touch) to access my Personal Hotspot, I have to unlock my iphone 4S, go to Settings>Personal Hotspot and wait for the iDevices to connect; something I don't have to do with my iPad. Additionally, Personal Hotspot connections made over Wifi use far more power on both devices than Bluetooth. The weird thing is, there was a week or two (before updating to iOS 5.0) that my iPod touch was able to see my iphone 4, connect to it via Bluetooth, and tether off the Personal Hotspot painlessly without me ever having to unlock the iphone, and open Settings. To be thorough, I tried using my iphone 4 (and even an old iphone 3GS running 4.3) as the 'host' devices for my Personal Hotspot, and every time the iPad had no issues connecting, but all the other iPhones saw no available Bluetooth devices. Also, there are other discussions on this issue, I've tried to 'bump' them by commenting. I genuinely believe this to be a software flaw, but I'm open to suggestions. Thoughts?

else get slow 3g on 3 network iphone

After years of trouble free use with o2, I just got a great (?) deal with a new iphone 4s on the 3 network with unlimited data and free tethering.First they put me on the wrong tarif, but I changed that and ended up with a £50 discount ( upfront fee for the phone refunded)Now, there is a red icon on the green phone icon that wont go away and I keep getting voicemail alerts when there are no voicemails, so they have given me a new sim that should be activated tomorrow and will cure that, hopefully.Next, internet on 3g is sooooo sloooow. I had wifi turned on so when I get home, my phone connects to my home network, when I am out, it connects to 3g. After being unable to connect to the internet at all today whilst out ( on 3g) 3 customer support told me to turn wifi off all the time, and I got onto the internet again. But, it is so slow. Does anybody else have an iphone on the 3 network and if so, is it slow to connect to the internet? Have you got wifi disabled? On o2, I left wifi on all the time and had no problems when connecting to the internet either with wifi or 3g. I just want this new phone to work properly or I might end up going back to o2 ( but itsd more expensive) I thought 3 were the best 3g provider! Allan

Wanting to Get My First iphone

Hey- How can I get an idea what size iphone 4S I should get?  Is there a way to get an idea not only on the processor size but also the plan type.  Right off I want the biggest to accomodate all the HD videos I take for work, but I really have no idea what size and pla I will need? I have a Mobile Hotspot 3G now but I was going to get the MIFI 4G.  Does tethering do the same thing as a Mobile Hotspot does like the Verizon MIFI 4510 4G?  With the new iphone 4S can you use your MacBook Pro wirelessly by setting up the iphone a certain way (which I assume is what is called tethering) this might get this question knocked of of this discusion, but does the iphone 4S work best on the ATT network since they both came at the same time and that is the network the iphone grew-up with.   If the smartphones with the dual core processor are coming out, would you wait for this phone before getting an iphone 4S (it looks like it has some new functions like Siri and it does have a dual core chip) thanks for the help.

iphone 4S-O2 UK-MMS VM and personal hotspot

Morning  Here is my issue: iphone 4S on 5.0.1, O2 UK network, contract allow tethering/personal hotspot If I go into Settings/General/Reset Settings/ Reset network settings, I have the personal hotspot menu coming up and working but I can't send MMS and visual voicemail isn't working (error message : can't connect to server). As said, personal hotsport is working perfect and the internet as well.  From that point, if I go into Settings/General/Network/Network settings, I can check that the settings for O2 UK are correct. If I then delete the dotdotdot password and retype the O2 UK password (which is " password " ) I get MMS working, visual voicemail working, internet connection working but the tethering/personal hotspot menu is gone.... I have spoke to O2 UK and they think it's a software issue on Apple side... Anyone else having the same problem? Thank you Jules

iphone 4 tethering Issue

I don't have the tethering plan, this phone was jail broken prior to my ownership of it. But now it runs tethering even though I don't have it jail broken. I have talked to AT&T and they are going to void any tethering connections so that I won't lose my unlimited data plan. But currently, it tries to tether to my laptop. Is there any way I can get it to stop? I'm running iOS5.0.1 currently.

iphone 4S4 tethering Verizon iphone 4S

iphone 4S tethering? (Verizon) If you have an iphone (4 & or 4S), and you enable teathering on the verizon carier. Your laptop (or other device(s) use that iphone hotspot, can it still accept phone calls? I hear that verizon won't let you talk and surf the web at the same time. . . what would happen to the phone call, what would happen to the connections if someone did answer a phone call. I can't determine for myself, because I don't own an iphone on verizon, or even have tethering enabled . . . so what would it do . .  should I stick to my USB 3G?

connect to iTunes again . iphone 4

I'm really getting tired of this. I thought with iOS5 the emphasis on the iphone becoming more stand-alone was on, well, actually becoming more stand-alone! I live in both Thailand and Australia. We came back to Australia recently and changed both of our phones under warranty. No problems there. We both have apple store purchased, unlocked phones. They are iphone 4's, not 4S. Prior to changing the phones both worked in Thailand on various Thai carriers (true, 123, dtac), and both worked in Australia on vodafone and Helstra.   When they were changed under warranty the replacement phones were only iOS4.x.x. In store, I put my sim in and I get the "connect this phone to iTunes" message. I got him to activate it. My wife needed a new sim which he couldn't help us with, so we put my sim in her phone and activated it as well.  We then went to a vodafone reseller and got a new microsim for her. Put it in her phone and straight away we get the "connect this phone to iTunes" message again. We went back to the Apple store and although he just re-activated it, the point was lost. I don't want to have to do this for every sim we put in the phone. My wife and I both use vodafone, what's the difference between her sim and mine? The phone's firmware is unlocked, so there should be no authentication required...  Moving along to the REAL problem.  I then came home I upped them to 5.0.x. Then I restored the phones using the backup I created the night before.  Now my wife had a need to go back to Thailand on short notice. She has not taken any computer with her, just her iphone, her Australian and Thailand sims. She landed in Phuket and before her connecting flight to her hometown she put in the Thailand sim. She gets the message she must connect to itunes to go forward. I'm sorry, but this is utter BS. She is now home for a couple of weeks with a phone she cannot use. She is in a town that doesn't have great internet, and she doesn't have ready access to a computer to connect to iTunes to re-activate the phone.  I am guessing that every time I go to a NEW country (or even carrier within the same country), I have to do the following: I have to buy a new sim for the phone,I have to take my laptop, I have to get my laptop connected to the internet (and tethering is now out of the question since the phone is kaput), hope the internet connection I am using has all required ports open for iTunes validation, plug my phone into the laptop and allow it to re-activate. I'll say it again, this is total and utter BS. It's MY phone, I bought it unlocked for a reason, and Apple are locking us out of it. ***? Now she has to make a special trip to a major town to go to an Apple reseller to get her phone reactivated. Or I suppose, she can ask someone in her town to download the iTunes virus onto one of their windows boxes and reactivate through that internet connection.  Is there NO OTHER WAY???  I'm sorry for venting here, but I have been stung in nearly every country I have been because of Apple. Being locked out of my phone for days at a time. Why isn't the authentication information stored in the iphone backup? Does this mean it's going to happen when I revisit everywhere I've been? This is beyond frustrating.  I ask again, politely; is there any other way? (please do't say buy a new non-Apple phone <G>)

Windows 7 Starter Netbook and iphone 4s tethering

Hello All. This is my first post here, and I thank all in advance who read/reply to my question. I just recently purchased an iphone 4S and it has been working great. I only have one problem with it: I am unable to make a connection to my Windows 7 starter netbook for tethering. (personal hotspot) I have read the apple support documents and it says windows 7 is supported. I have it activated through my carrier (Rogers in Canada). The netbook sees the iphone and i click connect, it just thinks about it for a minute and just says cannot connect to this network. It doesn't even allow me to enter the passcode I have set on the iphone. I have tried the iphone on other computers, and they all work and make the connection fine with both wifi connecting and direct USB. Works on my Vista Desktop, my windows 7 home premium laptop, and even my old XP laptop from 2004. I have installed iTunes on the netbook and it sees the iphone, but I still can't use it with tethering (thru wifi or USB) I thank everyone who reads/responds.

RE:my mac saying my iphone 4 doesn't have to right thing for bluetooth

Very vague. What are you talking about? What excatly does it say? What are you trying to do? The iphone will not connect to your mac ( other than tethering where provided by the wireless carrier).  This is not and has never been a feature of iphone.

Accidentally pressed forget this device in my iPhone4 with Macbook Pro

I have been pairing my MacbookPro with my iphone via bluetooth for tethering, and It worked fine... until I accidentally pressed forget this device in my iPhone4.I know the iphone keeps records of devices it forgot, so I reset all settings, hoping it would solve my issue. It didnt.I then removed my iphone from my bluetooth devices list on my Mac to try to set it up again. When I did, my mac detected my iphone, but the iPhones bluetooth did not detect my mac. Both bluetooths are on and discoverable. When I try to set up a new bluetooth device on the mac, it tries to pair with the iphone, a code appears on the screen, I get a request from my mac on the iphone with the same code, I accept the resquest... and a few moments later it says the attempt was unsuccessful. I tried several times, and I cant seem to find any help online...Oh, and tethering works fine via USB. Any ideas??Thanks. Macbook Pro OS 10.5.8

Internet tethering over USB not working iphone 4

Im on the Fido network here in Canada and my internet tethering is part of my 6GB data package without any addition fees as it is with AT&T in the U.S. Ive used tethering a thousand times but for some reason it is no longer working via USB. Its working fine over bluetooth but Id rather use USB because it seems to run faster than bluetooth and uses less power on both my iphone 4 and Macbook Pro.The last time I used it over USB and it worked is when my I was on OS X 10.6.5 and iOS 4.1 Im now on OS X 10.6.6 but still on iOS 4.1Before even thinking of updating my iOS is there any troubleshooting tips you guys can give me. I have tried rebooting my iphone 4, turned off 3G and cellular data and turned it back on with no avail. P.S. tethering with iPhone4 From working perfectly to useless

I recently activated the tethering option on my 2GB data plan with AT&T on my iPhone4. I am using a USB connection to my Windows Vista desktop.Three days ago, when I first set up the connection, it worked beautifully. I was able to activate the tethering option under Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet tethering = ON and I was using this with 3G and Cellular Data enabled. About five to ten seconds after I activated this option, Windows picked up the new networking device and I was using the tethered connection right away. The iphone showed the blue bar connection at the top of the screen for the homepage indicating that the tether connection was active.Yesterday, when I tried the same steps to activate my tethered connection, I was surprised that it no longer worked. My Windows machine is still able to recognize the iphone as a device (i.e. I can still see the content on the phone), but it no longer recognizes a network connection. I tried on my Win7 laptop to see if it was something related to my desktop, but it wasnt able to recognize the tethering network connection either. I have an old MBP that I might also hook up to see if that helps recognize the network connection, but I suspect the more likely candidate is the phone itself.I have spoken with AT&T about the issue and they were unable to provide a working solution. I have performed a hard reset on the phone. Does anyone know of a configuration step I might have missed or alternative methods of testing to try to restore my working tether connection? Id really appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks! Windows Windows Vista windows

tethering iphone 4 Vodafone Romania

Hi,I bought my iphone 4 from Belgium last summer. I am a Vodafone Romania customer. Working on the road, I used the tethering function a lot for connecting my MacBook to the internet. This, until December 2010 when Vodafone launched the iphone 4 in Romania. I got a carrier update and my tethering option disappear. After a few unsuccessful calls with their support team they told me that they removed the option and I should contact Apple or jailbreak my phone.I’m completely against jailbreak and that is why I bought an unlocked iphone from Belgium. My problem is that I had the tethering option before and they removed it without informing me. I should have been informed about the update and what it contains. The update wasn’t mandatory and I could have postponed it.This is not fair. tethering was an advantage for me when using my iphone and now I have to decide between changing Vodafone or jailbreaking my iphone 4.Please advise me.Best regards,An Apple big fan and customer,Mihai. iphone 4 iOS 4

Battery drain IOS update summary iphone 4

Please keep this thread clean by not asking basic questions and only post a message if it fully helps to find an advanced solution. Thanks. With this post I try to recap all steps that I have taken and all hints I read to solve my sudden battery drain problem after upgrading IOS.In my case I upgraded an unlocked iphone 3G from 4.1 to 4.2.1 and while in 4.1 battery consumption was at a decent level (usually 2 days without recharging) it now is less than 12 hours (with a fully restored phone, no backup, no data or 3g, no push etc.). But it is not necessarily a 3G or 4.2.1 issue, as it is also reported with earlier versions and other devices. Here are all steps I have taken to figure out what is causing the drain (and in other cases seem to solve the issue):1) Fully reboot the phone. Either by 1.1) pressing the power button for several seconds and then slide off the phone or 1.2) hold power button for as long as you see the apple boot logo.2) Switch off, remove or reset (independently and together) 2.1) 3G+data 2.2) wifi+tethering2.3) notifications2.4) push in mail2.5) all mail accounts2.6) location services2.7) bluetooth 2.8) auto-brightness (plus brightness as low as possible) 2.9) Safari/fraud warning+cache3) Reset all settings (General/Reset/Reset All Settings)4) Switch on airplane mode5) Fully restore your phone via iTunes5.1) from backup or 5.2) as new device5.3) again in dfu mode6) Downgrade to 4.1 or 3.1.3 (not officially supported)7) Replace battery (in my case did not help)8) Replace device (I am out of warranty, so no solution for me)As all steps did not help, my assumption is that either my mainboard suddenly has a malfunction, there might be a bug in a part of the firmware that only updates once (e.g. baseband) or maybe the upgrade process itself is faulty in some cases. I am jailed at 4.2.1 (with baseband 05.15.04 and bootloader 5.9) so I cannot reset my baseband to an earlier release and I know it might not be an appropriate question, but has someone tried to upgrade to baseband 06.15.00 and does that solve the issue? Did anyone check if a bb downgrade has any influence on this batterygate?Best regards,Bjoern. Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.6.5)

tethering not work with active LAN connection iphone 4

I have a simple setup with two computers, PC1 and PC2, connected through a router. I want to use iphone 4 tethering to give internet access to PC1 while at the same time accessing files on the network (PC2), but this setup does not work. Let me explain.Simply enabling tethering on the iphone yields a total of two connections in the Network and Sharing Center (Windows 7), iPhone4 connection and LAN (physically connected to the router), where the iPhone4 connection shows that it has internet access. Trying to use internet, web, ftp, or whatever fails however. If I disable the LAN connection so I have a single connection (the one to the iphone) I will get internet access but ofcourse I then loose access to my LAN and PC2.This can not be by design, my setup should be more than usual, yet I have seen noone else post on this problem (using a simple google search). I use the latest iTunes (10.1.1.4) and iOS (4.2.1) and my provider is Halebop (Sweden). iPhone4 + Custom PC Windows 7

Hi guys, my question is this, when I turn on the Internet tethering in my iphone nothing happens, not when I go to the network preferences, and try to configure the iphone, there is no option that pops up with iphone networking. And trying to use the blutooth neither, nothing shows up for the USB cable nor for the Bluetooth. iphone 4 16 GIG iphone 3GS 16 GIG, iMac 27 inch i7 quad core 12 gigs of ram, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

New phone and even more troubles dropped calls iphone 4

I got sick and tired of my 3Gs rebooting on calls, so as my contract was out anyway I upgraded to iPhone4 which came with 4.2.1, and now it drops calls and internet tethering when I touch the phone. At first I did not know why this was happening, now I have discovered if I touch the phone in the bottom corner or near the corner, any current call, internet, or tethered internet will drop, and the phone reverts to Searching..., when i let go of the phone it restores the connection. Is this a faulty phone, or just another unfixed issue of Apples hardware?I must say I am really get sick and tired of faulty phones.Nic Wilson 2010 Macbook Air 12.6 27" iMac, iPhone4

I have found it easy to run the Internet tethering with one computer but when I try it on my Dell Laptop I find nothing happens. On the first computer when I turn the Internet tethering On it starts up a wizard and a band appears on the top stating Internet tethering but when I try the same on the laptop nothing happens at all. I have iTunes 10 install on the laptop with Win 7. Any help would be appreciated. Dell Windows 7
