iphone 3G frozen after recent OS update. Now stuck on restore

Today I updated my iphones OS (original OS - not jailbroken) and after having downloaded the new OS, itunes attempted to install the new OS onto my 3G iphone. when the phone freezes, it has an apple logo and progress bar on the screen. It ALWAYS freezes at approximately 20% according to the phone screen. Itunes freezes at 50% when it is restoring iphone software.I have restarted my iphone over 3 times (by pressing and holding down both the power and the circle button) and the phone does restart but tells me to plug it into itunes. When I plug it into my computer and connect to itunes, itunes tells me i need to:check the iphone software update server to identify this deviceI click check and this works ok. However another error message pops up that says:iTunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this phone before it can be used in itunes.I click ok and then press restore and it seem sto work except that it freezes again as i described above.Ive noticed other people are experiencing similar problems and wondered if they have found any solutions to this? Would really appreciate ANY help as at this state, my iphone is BRICK that doesnt work as either a phone, gaming console, or organiser.I am very disappointed with Apple for releasing an OS that in effect disables the core purpose of the iphone (a PHONE!!!) and now have lost confidence in their products. iphone 3G very unhappy custome

So, this is the seventh time Ive tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. Ive tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do? Ive already called Apple and dont have access to a store. I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error. Very frustrating. Anyone have the same problem? How to fix iOS4 induced slowness on 3G iphone 3G

Well, having tried Apple retail store, Apple online help, telephone support and getting stonewalled or denial or just no solution I realised the actual solution lays in the longer game. Even after leaving my email address and phone number on Apple Feedback sites I never had someone contact me to address my 3G issues personally. So the strategy I have now is as follows: I meet on average probably ten business people per day through my work, different people mostly. Inevitably there is an opportunity to talk about mobile phones etc, even if just over coffee break. I make it my point now to recount my 3G-iOS4-slowdown horror-story-and-no-admission-by-Apple story to as many as possible , but more than that - I ensure they get the clear picture that buying an Apple iphone can be a BIG risk regarding the handset and after-sales customer service too, and that choosing another handset/OS (e.g Android) should be seriously considered for health and happiness (and business effectiveness if you rely on these devices). I figure a percentage will carry that message on to other conversations with other business people. Its a kind of viral marketing - designed to build a volume over time exponentially - a lobbying force or just a gradual force of consumer changed habit that will demonstrate to Apple that ignoring your previously loyal customers and going in denial about it only results in customers turning on you in force - which over time will be reflected in lower sales and of course more widespread bad reputation. Thats capitalism for you, but with the shoe on the other foot. I was Apples biggest fan but now I am compelled to continue this strategy until I get some truthful admission by them and solutions (without the obvious one which cynically I suspected from the start was their strategy - forcing 3G owners to move to the iphone 4). Either that or if no help comes our way then to continue to market the counter-message and warning about Apple products and service. I am no mathematician if I meet two people person per day who each go on to tell two more people per day - how many is that in one 30 day month who carry the message? The clock is ticking. You can do this too - it the long run it places pressure on the company to change or at least respond. That may be better than hacking your 3G to try to get back to OS 3.1.3 etc as there will be no need for Apple to change their ways if you keep it to yourself like that. Think about it again. When I get a new text message, the alert is not going off. I have checked that the sound for text message is on but still nothing. I noticed tonight that if I change the text message sound its not giving a preview of it. I thought it use to do that as well. Drivers install incorrectlyno detected by iTunes super tl dr material iphone 3G

I have an iphone 3G running iOS4.01 and the latest version of iTunes.I dont know how it started. I was updating to iTunes 10 and I lost power to my computer (iphone was not connected at the time). After a reboot, I uninstalled iTunes because it would no longer run (shutdown in middle of installation does that). Then I downloaded and installed iTunes 10.0.0.68. Everything seemed fine. I even bought a song or two. I wanted to sync that song to my iphone so I connected it to my computer. I have set custom sounds in windows so that it lets me know when a device connects. The connect sound plays but the iphone does not start to charge, nor does iTunes pop open, nor does windows explorer pop open with device options. Nothing happens.So I open up devices and it shows me the usual stuff but categorized under unknown is Apple Mobile Device USB or something like that with a warning explanation point ! next to it telling me that there is an error with it. So I right click and select troubleshoot. Cant fix problem. So I open up the (almost) never failing google and start searching. I find a mind-boggling amount of cases similar but usually with an iPod not an iphone and those were solvable. I finally get to one that says that I should try resetting my iphone and making connect in recovery mode. So I hold the power and home buttons down until the iphone turns off. I open iTunes, hold down the home button and connect the iphone. The Connect to iTunes screen appears... and nothing happens. Not immediately, not after 30 minutes. Nothing (except for the iphone timing out and powering off again). So then I take a huge leap of faith and decide to actually use apples support page. After sorting through stuff designed for the mentally challenged who cannot locate the home button, I find http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538 .This is exactly the problem I am having and yet following the instructions brings up problems That I havent seen before.So I follow the instructions like a good dog and locate the driver under Universal Serial Bus controllers and as per the instructions I uninstalled it. I then Scan for hardware changes. This is where the instructions start to seem non applicable. As it said it would, scanning for hardware changes found and installed drivers from the iphone. But instead of installing the Apple Mobile Device driver, I now have a device under portable devices called Apple iphone.This seemed fine but...iTunes still failed to recognize it. Windows seemed to think that the device is some sort of camera (applying a camera icon to it in the simple device manager). Windows explorer popped up this time and I can see all the photos on my iphone and copy them and all but it still wants to think this is a camera. The iphone charges now at least.The instructions continue and I try to follow. It says to search for updates to the Apple Mobile Device driver. Because this is not there and there seems to be no way of getting it there, I apply this to the Apple iphone under Portable Devices. Everything seems to run smoothly until: Click the Browse button, then navigate to the following location: C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers. it seems to tell me that if I am on a 64-bit edition of windows (as I am) I should search for it under C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers. but in that location the drivers folder in that location doesnt exist (I dont have 32-bit iTunes installed I guess.) So I go to the C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers directory instead and not only does the folder exist but the file is there too. The file usbaapl64 is there and the instructions seem to imply that I should use it if I am 64-bit windows. So I try to use it.BAM! Another problem: The folder you specified doesnt contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver (which it does), make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.Seriously. What do I do now? Modified HP Pavillion Elite iOS 4 Windows 7 64 bit.

Getting text message from T-Mobile USA on O2 UK iphone 3G

Hi,A friend of mine who lives in the US and who has a BlackBerry (on the T-Mobile USA network) has tried several times to send me text messages on my iphone 3G (on the O2 UK network), but to no avail.I have contacted O2, but surprise surprise they told me that nothing is wrong at their end. I thought that the problem was maybe related to my upgrading to iOS 4.0.x, but yesterday I reverted to 3.1.3 and I am still not able to get text messages from my friend.Surely, there has to be something wrong with either my iphone 3G, the operating system, and/or O2? voicemail password issue iphone 3G

My phone shows a message Enter voicemail password with option to cancel regardless of what app the phone is running. I hit cancel, message goes away. The message randomly pops back up again randomly. Ive noticed the message pops back up when the phone crashes during running application, listening to music etc or even just pushing the home button. There has never been a password on my visual voicemail before. How do I get the message to stop popping up. I looked under settings for a Turn off password and still randomly appears again. iphone wiped out after update to 4.0 failed

I connected to itunes and was advised of update 4.0 (or something similar) so clicked on update. After some 20+ minutes I received a message saying update had failed. Hi all,As you can tell by the direct subject line of my post, yes, my iphone 4 screen is knackered.My phone slipped off of my office chair today when I put it down mid-text to read an email. Its about a whole foot off the ground, since I like to low-ride around at work. I picked it up, nonchalant, as you do if it has a small fall, looked at the screen and gasped. I never thought they were that fragile!Anyhoo, I was wondering how much it would cost for an iphone 4 screen replacement in GBP from Apple.I phoned their automated system and the nice robotic girl was very helpful at not being very helpful at all. I never thought Id try and argue with The Terminators sister, but I did!Ive decided against insurance since most (if not all companies) are wanting about £100 upfront for any iphone 4 claim + the monthly premiums. Plus trying to claw any sort of solace out of an insurance company usually takes about 6 months.Ive had a look at a couple of third party repairs companies and mobileease.co.uk seems like one of the best bets thus far, although I dont know if theyd use the fabled and genuine aluminosilicate glass. I cant seem to find the price for an Apple repair anywhere online. I was even quoted £60 for an iphone screen via my service provider (Which I think was for a 3G/3GS). iphone 4 wifi connects gets ip signal icon not showing cannot browse

Hi All, Since last friday I am not able to connect to my companys wifi, but Ive been doing that with no troubles since I got my phone.Basically I setup the hidden wlan, with wpa2 security, and Im able to connect, the iphone even reponds the ping request im sending the ip from my laptop.The odd thing is that the wireless signal icon (besides the carrier signal indicator) is no longer present and if I try to use safari I get the following message: Cellular Data is Turned Off (which is ok, Im not trying to use gprs/umts) - Cannot Open Page.Can anyone tell me what I should do? Sometimes I can be sat next to my iphone in a quiet room and Im waiting for a text (reply to one Ive just sent). How I add an Address Book Server account to iphone 3G iOS 3.1.3

Heya, I have an iphone 3G that is running version 3.1.3 of the iphone OS and I need to add an Address Book Server account (that is being run on Snow Leopard Server to the phone but the only option I have is LDAP. My understanding is that Address Book Server uses CardDAV not LDAP. So I went ahead and added the account by choosing Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account... ->Other -> Contacts - Add LDAP Account and entered my servers information. After selecting Next it prompts me with the following message:Cannot Connect Using SSL - Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?I choose Continue -> the message disappears and I choose Save -> then Im prompted with this message:This account may not be able to search contacts. Are you sure you want to save?I choose Save and it appears to add it. To verify I exit Settings and go to Address Book and none of my contacts appear. I even let it sit for an hour on a WiFi connection without any luck. If I drop ONE MORE CALL iphone 4

Ok I know its my first post but I need to vent... I had an iphone 3Gs and that was the best phone EVER. It never dropped a call, everything worked perfect... well where I work bought it for me. They giveth and taketh away... gave me an iphone 4 and gave my phone to someone else... This phone is the PITS! I want to literally stomp it with a sledgehammer!! It drops every call... then you cant call back... Ive done all the upgrades. I bring it into the store, in 2 weeks it dropped 150 calls! Its a work phone, it rings a LOT. Well they give me another one and guess what?? this one is WORSE. Put a case on it.. USELESS! That did nothing. Now on Monday I have yet another appointment with an Apple store and pray they give me yet another one that oh I dont know...works?? Is there ANY way to go in and request a downgrade!?!? Im completely fed up at this point and to top it off since its a work phone, everyone around me is getting ticked off. Its like walking around with a big toy... Just got my iphone 4-32gig; upgraded to itunes 10; my podcast and movies are not syncing. Hi All,How are you doing?I just got my iphone 4 few days ago,the battery usage drop 1% every 4-7minjust by doing very light surfing on safari or immobile, reading forums and textmax only 3 tabs.I got all those that will drain battery turn off, push, fetch, 3g, even brightness is on 25%any of those unnecessary is all off.Im not sure am I getting a good performance on the battery since I jump from iphone 2G.I got around 10hr 35min of usage, 12hr plus of stand by on my first cycle.Checking all around the net Ive found many users with stand by dropping heavily on battery.Fortunately for me I do not have such problem whenever its on stand by the battery hardly move at all.Not knowing is this normal for iphone 4,or maybe its just not up to my expectation.However, I do find that theres quite a lot of iphone 4 replacement issue mostly reason cause by a bad battery.Any suggestion ? mbp 2.8Ghz(mid 2009) Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Fix for VM not received and visual voicemail not showing iphone 4

Wanted to share this with all. Easy fix at bottom of this postIphone 4 user.My voice mail was not getting through - no tri-tone alert and no sign of the message on visual voice mail screen. Happened over the last 10 days after working properly prior.Called Apple Care rep. Lots of thought, lots of consultation (10 minutes)Advice: take Sim card out and the put it back in and/OR call ATT to address issue.OK... I didnt touch the Sim...called ATT. Rep keeps me on 10 minutes! Could almost smell the smoke of her mental processes as she kept saying OK just one minute about 30 times and lots of questions for me!Finally says she is stumped and gets me to her 2nd level tech person.This person tells me do this simple thing - delete any visual voice mails and then delete all the deleted. Simple as can be. Took 15 seconds. Problem solved.AND... she said its a known issue and that this fix has worked well every time.Worked for me and so far I dont have to keep constantly deleting the VMs to keep it working.I told her, please tell your fellow reps and please let the Apple reps know this as well. iOS cant handle forwarded emails iphone

Ive just run headlong into a major email problem after setting up an associates email client to automatically forward selected email addresses to her during a three week trip carrying only an iPad and iphone for email access.The only available option for the automatic forwarding is to forward the email as an attachmentThe problem is that the iPads GMail client simply presents the attached emails as cannot open attachments. This is not only the GMail client, but the problem is there for other as well, so, the email client appears to be common except for the setups.These attachments do have a filename extension... it is .eml (which is a long existing and standard extension for email attachments)imho, this needs immediate attention.The only (apparent) current options are to manually forward the emails inline or to use a webmail interface... if it happens to be GMail, there are additional problems. whats up with mail anyway?if someone mails my me.com account my phone will vibrate, the mail icon is badged indicating i have a new email waiting.inbox is badged with say a 1 for 1 new email !!but when i go to the inbox, the new message doesnt show up. it seems i have to switch in and out of mail, or maybe i have to switch from inbox to different folders for that message to show up in the inboxis this normal? does it normally seem to take 1 to 2 minutes (using wifi) after your mail icon gets badged to indicate you have new email before that email shows up?as far as i can tell it does the refresh on its own and it says last updated (current time and date it just doesnt seem to show up unless i switch from like deleted folder and then inbox a couple times mac mini and powermac g4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

For the past week I have dropped it, thrown it at a wall... And even thru my iphone out the window of a car while driving to prove that my case is a beast .... iphone 4 Bug List-iOS 4.0.2

I just wanted to post this topic as Im curious if the Apple monster will even read this or address them. I hope I get surprised. Apple makes, hands down, the most high quality of devices, but they tend to have it there way more than ours. I guess thats what makes them Apple. Without further ado, here is my list of bugs Ive noticed and I hope youll add to it. I would just love to see Apple address these:1. Performance issues with Podcasts and multiple-tasking. Youll hear stuttering on occasion, sometimes often while playing a podcast or even music. Ive noticed this at random and also at times when the phone locks or when switching out of the iPod.2. I just noticed this one: if you take the time to write on this exact site, you will find yourself getting lost, as sometimes the text goes on, and the screen doesnt follow it. Suprising that even on the iPhones home site, it cant perform the way it ought to. Youll also notice that below here, its asking me what hardware Im using and what OS. It should be clear what hardware Im on and even what OS Im running. Brilliant, considering this is Apple.com, I selected the iphone 4 section, and the browser can report the os version. Oh wow, I just lost my text again and had to press the expanding icon on the bottom right of this pane. Also, sometimes i lose my text permanently where I should be able to scroll down to find it but there arent scroll bars... The attention to detail of the aesthetics of the phone cant be matched on the outside, but again, leave a lot to be desired on the inside.3. Echo for the remote callers own voice when my phone is plugged into a stereo through the headphone jack. Even when my volume is so low, I cant hear it.4. While heavily texting, if I exit out to the home screen after/during the send of the text, my phone will freeze for a good 60-120 seconds. If I press too many buttons, trying to get it to respond, it will reboot itself instead of coming back to life. Again this only happens (very seldom) when Im sending texts to multiple random people and I abruptly go home while a message is being sent (or maybe received?).5. While playing music, the quality will often drop drastically when entering a game or application that has sounds. This has only happened in two places so far. While talking on the phone, if I go to play music on the iPod to hear in my headphones, and when entering Bejeweled 2 Blitz with the in-game music off and the sounds on, while iPod music is being played. I do not believe this is Bejeweled at fault. Try it, make a call and try and play some background music in your headphones. The quality drops to a very unacceptable level.Thats actually all I can think of for now! Please fix these issues Apple and I will gain a good bit of respect, knowing you heard and acknowledged this. Gap between glass and metal band. iphone 4

I have a really thin gaps between the glass and metal band in the upper front and back right corner, and was wondering if anyone else has noticed small gaps between the glass and metal band anywhere on their phone. ive had nothing but crappy customer service at both apple stores near me, but was eventually told by the genius that i could come back with another appointment before the 30 days and swap for a new retail phone in the box. The only thing that worries me is getting a whole new phone with more different problems then the one i have with only the gap issue. Then I will get a message saying the phone is no longer locked to any carrier.How do I know when the update is ready for my phone? After deactivating my 3G and activating the new phone, and copying my 3G data to the new phone, I removed the front and back plastic protective film on the new phone only to find a nice set of scratches in the front glass next to the ear speaker. Now I get to go through the hassle of dealing with AT&T for an exchange and getting my 3G re-activated until the replacement arrives.Dont make the same mistake as me. Unable to connect to PC via Bluetooth iphone 4

I read several threads, but couldnt find an appropriate answer. I am doing the following to try to connect iphone 4 to my laptop:1. On iphone: turn BT on.2. On PC: Add new BT device. The laptop finds the iphone.3. To pair the devices, I am asked to confirm a security code on both laptop and iphone. Once confirmed on both devices, a message displays saying that theyre paired.4. On the iphone, however, the little status indicator just keeps spinning; on the laptop, I get a message saying that it could not connect to the remote device.Is the iphone only capable of connecting to a BT headset? I have a new iphone 4G & have transferred all data from the old iphone 3G. Wiped the iphone 3G and want to rebuild it for my son from my own iTunes account. So he can use all the games I downloaded. He only is 9 so I dont want to give him a phone SIM yet. Now the 3G is wiped clean the message on the iphone is Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iphone. iTunes says the SIM is locked.I dont want to put in SIM. My old SIM is no longer working. Ported mobile number from carrier.How do I tell iTunes to forget about asking for a SIM? MacBook Mac OS X (10.6.4)

iphone 3G no longer recognized by iTunes

I dont know what happened. I havent changed any settings on my pc. I updated my phone software to 4.0.2 last week with no apparent problems. I think Ive charged on my pc since but cant remember for sure. Now when I hook to usb, it goes on and off. Like not the power, but it (the iphone) will connect and show charging and I get the windows message that the apple camera is connected and what do i want to do. then it blinks off, like shows my welcome screen, not charging. then a few seconds later it shows up again and shows to be charging. it goes through this over and over. And iTunes does not recognize the iphone, says an error occurred.Any thoughts or suggestions? Dell XPS 410 Windows XP

URGANT iphone 4 stuck on recovery mode

I just got my iphone 3 days ago! (Saturday) I went over to my cousins house to add some songs. When I connected the USB cable to his computer and my iphone it went straight into recovery mode. I thought it was his computer so I went home to my computer and the same problem occurred! I searched everywhere to try to solve this issue. I even downloaded some stuff that supposily forces iDevices out of recovery mode but nothing worked. I also tried holding the 2 buttons and bam, nothing. Please, anyone with a solution, please help me.update Whenever I try to restore, I get an error message. It happens for firmware 4.0,4.01, and 4.0.2. Hi Team,Yes i am getting the same error as everyone else BUT as i am the systems engineer i looked on our primary domain controllyer (SBS 2003) i noticed in the event viewer under security we are getting the following error: logon failed :reason unknown username or bad password. now i have double and tripple checked the password and then reset it to password and then tried and then reset it back again and i still get the error message. it does not seem to matter if i have ssl on or off i am still having this issue. i have been having i have not been able to fix this issue since the upgrade on thursday (and it is the CEOs iphone.) I have my first iphone and cant figure out how to send an automatic text. When I am on a phone call and another call comes in, I am used to hitting a ignore and send text button or something similar that will send a message to the person calling me. This is a preset text that says something like I am on the phone, please leave me a message or similar that at least tells the caller that I am busy. So, the questions are:1. OK, so a few days ago I finally got around to upping to iOS 4.02. The next day, I started getting an abhorrent number of dropped calls, fail to connects, no internet service, the works. Mostly while driving, making this more annoying (the little bzzzzzzzz of a dropped call in my earpiece, not so fun.I am, in fact, in possession of a clue (as well as a degree in Information Systems), so I start troubleshooting on my own. Jumping into an out of Airplane mode (force to look for network) results in a temporary fix - as in, about 3 seconds of connectivity. Resetting ALL network settings seems to result in about the same. After three or four cycles of this, the phone drops service again, but displays a message saying that it was unable to make or recieve calls, and that I needed to preform a restore.Which I did. And it worked. For thirty seconds, and then I got the same message.So I restored. Again. Reset network settings again, just to be safe.It just dropped a call on me to my mother. Im going to have a lot of fun hearing about how I hung up on her, except that I have... you guessed it, No Service. No restore message though.Im using a silicone case, the phone is sitting on my desk now, wasnt touching it, let alone the antenna when any of this happened, using my headset actually, my wifes got 5 bars of tower even using the death grip, and so does my old 3G (work pays for it, so I have 3 AT&T lines) and Im less than a mile away from a tower, and we usually get really good service here. I dont think its an AT&T problem b/c my other lines are fine.Im out of suggestions. Anyone else seeing anything like this? iphone 4 iOS 4 ?

Im not a fan of the iphone. But as they say....Dont knock it till you try it. So I bought one to see if I would like it. I bought second hand and it worked fine...that is until I did a OS4 upgrade on it and then it kept saying No sim card installed. I tried everything but to no avail. So I restored back to factory settings and I still get the same message. Please install an active sim card with no pin lock. My card works fine in my other phone. I have even tried 2 other sim cards in the iphone but get the same. No sim card. Please help. It is really, really frustrating. iphone OS 3.0

iphone wont turn on

I think I am fuked. My iphone was constantly freezing today. I did a reset (holding down home and power button) I did that twice. I wanted to sync my phone into iTunes so that I could have all of my photos on my computer before my phone stopped working. Well no point. Wont sync. I try turning it on and syncing and all it does is show the apple logo then it shuts down. I am about to cry right now because all my photos from my trip and my text messages are gone. I cant even get my phone on to even try and reset it. I dont know what to do. Windows XP

Cant update iphone 3G Unable to connect with iTunes

Last night I set up my iphone 3G to upgrade to iOS4, when I wake up this morning it has the connect to iTunes screen. No problem I thought, can sort that out. Hi there,My 2 week old iphone 4 OS 4.0.2 is acting up. Here is what often happen when I am typing a text message:Starts typing a lot of random letters... Hits the send button so it sends the random text to the recipient.. Then enters another conversation, typing more random text and sends.. And it all happens very fast. And sometimes when attempting to unlock the home screen, I try to hit 6, and it will enter 3333 - wrong code...What is the deal? Software upgrade or should I have it replaced?
