Hello everyone, Im new to this Discussion Board Ive been an iphone 3GS 32GB user for over a year now, and I decided to make an account here and start this topic, because Ive got a really serious problem... As the topic title can give you a hint on what is going on, let me describe everything in detail:Not so long ago I had upgraded my iphone with iOS 4.0 to 4.0.1 (I did that 1 day after the official release of the new version). 2 days ago, when I wanted to make a call, I came across an issue manifesting itself by iphone nearly instantly showing Call ended and later on Call failed, consecutively. It was happeninng so, regardless of whom I wanted to call. Whats noticable is that I could send and receive text messages, as well as receive incoming calls, without any problems. Making some research on the Internet, I found out that similar issues had been occurring with the earlier versions of the OS. None of the solutions described (turning off the automatic date and time setting and so on) didnt help me, as well as turning the iPhoone on and off, trying to get into the DFU mode, and downgrading to iOS 4.0 (I couldnt downgrade anyway) which didnt help either. Not knowing what to do next, I restored my iphone to the factory settings, losing, as obvious, all apps, text messages, contacts etc. along the way. After this restore I was able to make outgoing cals again but wanting to have all my text messages I decided to load the newest backup onto my iphone, and see what would happen. After loading the backup, I had all my contest back again but I was also again unable to make outgoing calls... (this proved that the issue was caused by some saved iphone settings, or something similar, but not the iOS version itself). In this case I had nothing else to do, but to get back to the factory settings once again. As I cared abot keeping all my text messages, I read on the Internet the the way to save them is to copy the file called 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 from the backup folder. In the next step you were supposed to make a backup of the phone restored to the factory settings, and overrite the file in that backup with the onee you had copied earlier (to spare myself any problems, I also copied the 31bb7ba8914766d4ba40d6dfb6113c8b614be442 file with the contacts). The problem turned out to be the fact that in the guide about all these files, there wasnt mentioned any information that you also should copy the following files: Info.plist, Manifest.plist i Status.plist (unfortunately, I found out about this fact later). I ompletely lost the rest of these files be deleting folders with the previous backup. So now, when I put the files I had copied earlier to the folder with the new backup, I am presented with this kind prompt while trying to restore: iTunes cannot restore iphone (XXX) because some files from the archive couldnt be restored (or something similar because, since I hahe the Polish version of iTunes installed, Im not sure how it is put in the original literally). Ive tried to restore these *.plist files with some file recovery tools. These tools do find these files from the same day (that is, the 18th), but they differ from each oter by the time they were last modified (some are from 12:19A.M., others from 3:20P.M.), as well as the differ from the 2 files I had copied by the same manner. I assume that these differences in time (as well as in checksums that I found out about) cause the backup to not be seen by iTunes when I put these revovered *.plist (along with the 2 files that I had copied) in the backup folder. The same result occurrs when I recover these files with the long names the same way I had recovered the *.plist files, and put them in the folder with these *.plist files.I cant deny that I would really like to have all my text messages back.... Does anyoneone know how to import them back on the iphone from that 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 file, because Im getting really frustrated here I read it could be achieved by checking the *.plist files checksums if iTunes doesnt want to restore a backup the normal way. If this is the only way to do it (or if there are any other work arounds), please guide me on how to do it. I really need help Intel based PC Windows 7 The PC OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit
I just recently downloaded the 4.0.1 updated hoping it woud fix many of the issues I had after installing IOS4.0. Since installing the OS I have lost (I have verified these same issues on my wifes phone so it is not HW specific) the following functionality with my 3G:1) I can no longer start my Ipod from the remote clicker on my head phones. If the IPOD applicaton is running it will start and stop fine, but it used to start playing music even if the IPOD app wasnt active. 2) Bluetooth seems very instable. I have had it disconnect occasionally during calls but can restore the connection if I select the device again.3) several applications take a very long time to load. If we dont reboot our phones avery 5-7 days, eventualy text and other applications will crash on launch until I reboot. THen the phone is snappy again for about a day. (memory leak??)4) 3 times on my phone and 2 times on my wifes phone while usingit (all three of mine have been using the built in text message app) The phone has re-booted (more than 50% full battery) I erased my text message history and no improvement/change.5) Google Maps takes forever to show my location on the map and initial guesses at my location seem to be off by 100s of miles (before it would narrow in on my location over the first 10 seconds, but it now takes 30-40 seconds and seems to not even know which side of the city I am on anymore...)A few other things but not sure how repeatable they are, but the experience so far has been very frustrating... I have heard of other issues with IOS4, but havent seen some of these issues. And now my questions..A) Is there a way to downgrade to 3.1.3 or other via I-tunes (dont want to jailbrake the phone) or know if/when and update will be available to address some of these issues? B) Is the iphone4 having similar issues (or is this 3g specfic)?C) Any tips to fixing any of these issues? (I tried turning off all notifications as was in one post but it didnt help as they are already off..)Message was edited by: Rhinokerr Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.6.4)
I have a number of concurrent issues.Upgrade to OS 4.0.1 will not complete restore component. Had to take to apple to restore restore the phone. Then when I went to restore my back up, it loads OK, but still hangs after back up - will not complete the sync.Have to slide to cancel - or it times out if I leave it.In addition every back up will not allow me to sync music. The end of the syncing seems to be the issue.have received errors (-20) and 9 in various attempts.I have 2 phones, with same issues. Is it itunes latest version or something else in my PC? I have disabled antivirus and re-installed itunes. Can anyone help? 3G phone OS 4.0.1 Windows XP

So my sleep/wake (power) button on my iphone 3G is broken, and I tried updating to iOS4 on iTunes 9.2 on my Macbook Pro. So, the restore seems like its going well, but during the progress indicator process of Restoring iphone (right before it begins to verify,) it got stuck. So, I unplugged the phone thinking it would go into Recovery Mode. However, for the last 3 hours it has had the same screen on the device that you would see if you were restoring the phone. I am trying to make the battery die, but it is taking forever, and I cant put the device into DFU mode because my sleep/wake button is broken. The phone is not under warranty and I do not know what to do. Please help! Thanks. iphone 3G iphone OS 3.1.3
Okay, so I plugged my phone into iTunes so I could get the new update. Well in order for this to happen, I needed to backup my phone and do a restore with the new software. So I do all of this, but when my phone is restoring with backup, it stops and iTunes says it was interrupted. I have no idea why this is happening and it keeps doing it! Without restoring with backup, my phone is completely useless. Somebody please help me! Windows XP Windows XP

I am so very disappointed in Apples lack of response or help regarding the OS4 and iphone 3G.Originally a hugh support of Apples philosophy and product, I find myself questioning their values and ulterior motives. Currently, I have an iphone 3G 8GB. It worked like a dream until I installed the OS4. Like other forum members, my phone freezes, sputters, chokes and does all sorts of unusual oddities. I have gone to the Genius Bar at Apple only to be told that, it works fine for everyone else, excluding me and that basically, there is nothing that they can do about it. I bring to their attention that on the actual Apple forum, there are others like myself complaining of the same things! The response I get is that, people on here are not genuine and that you cant believe everything you read. Are they for real? The other responses that I get is to, reboot 3 to 4 times a day, restore, restore to factory, and to wait for the update of OS4.But if OS4 is the culprit then how can it accommodate my iphone 3G? Oh and the best response I get from the Apple store is, if you are unhappy with your phone, you can upgrade to the iphone 4!Just recently, I did as told, and updated the OS4 on my phone.. and guess what!? It is worse off than it was previously. I just find it ironic that Apple refused to acknowledge the fact that this operating system (OS4) is rubbish for 3G users. IM STILL WAITING FOR APPLE TO MAKE IT RIGHT imac Mac OS X (10.6.3)
My 3G 16gb was opening screens for messages, phone, photos, etc really slow on OS 4. So thought id update to OS4.0.1. After updating, my phone was displaying No service for two hours. I could not make a call. So i tried switching airplane mode on and off to see if it would search for my network (Optus in australia). Well it tried to search for a network for 30 mins. So now i tried doing a restore to factory settings via itunes. Went fine up until the point where it said to leave the phone connected to itunes while it restarts, it will reappear in itunes once it has restarted. It tried to restart but it came up in itunes as There is no sim card installed in the iphone you are trying to activate. Tells me to disconnect, insert a sim card. Disconnecting from itunes, the phone displays an insert sim card message whilst on the emergency calls only screen. Have tried ejecting and reinserting my sim card multiple times.OS 4 has been nothing but suck so far. Mac OS X (10.5.8) early 2009 MBP 2.66 15"
The install and restore seemed to work fine. All the icons are there. As soon as they open, they close. Only the core apple functions work. Ive been told to downgrade, but that shouldnt be necessary.Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions? Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.5.6)
Under the instructions of itunes when i plugged in my iphone 3g it said there was a new update for my phone i carried out this update and it crashed my phone. When it finally restarted i was asked to restore my phone and got an error code number 21. My phone is now stuck in the activation screen just the way i got it when it came out the box. I tried to contact apple but after 25 mins on the phone and then getting disconected i gave up and then called orange iphone support who advised that Apple were aware of the problem and didnt advise anyone to ignore the update. Any idead how i sort this out or does anyone know of a email address for support toshiba Windows 7
Can anybody help me i plugged my iphone 4 into my computer an itunes said there was an update available to 4.0.1 so i went through the normal phase and now have come a bit unstuck. it extracts the software and runs through the normal process but only gets so far and then bombs out and comes up with the following message the iphone could not be restore the following error occured (9)can anybody help asap cos now my phone will not come back to life or work at allthanks mark redding hp iOS 4
I have updated to the latest iOS 4.0.1 and now it is not recognising any SIM card in the phone. It will only display Searching... then go to no SIM Card. I have never removed the SIM card from the phone so it has to be a problem with the update. I have now tried several SIM cards from different carriers and still it is not working. I have perform a clean restore and a DFU restore with no luck. I have even contacted my carrier and they reckon its on issue with the phone. Windows 7
I finally succumbed to the pop-ups telling me to install iOS4. It crashed during the restoring iphone software stage. I now do not have any operating system on my phone. I have tried restoring but it will not proceed further than 13% of the progress bar on restoring iphone softwareAny help will be gratefully received. iphone OS 3.1.3

After installing the new iOS4 update and suffering through the same overly long backup process as a lot of other people, I have now found that I have limited space available on my iphone due to 4.32GB of Other listed in the Capacity pane at the bottom of the iTunes iphone window.Heres the breakdown:Audio: 6.54GBVideo: 358.6MBPhotos: 134.4MBApps: 698.6MBOther: 4.32GBFree: 2.66GBI did remove most of my photos and videos—before I did that there was less than 30MB of Free space. After the iOS install, there was an error that told me the restore had failed, so I restored again from the iphone backup and now I have this extra, unknown Other data.Anyone have a clue what could be in Other and how do I get rid of it while still retaining my app settings and preferences? iphone 3G 16GB iOS 4
Well, ive had lots of trouble after updating my iphone 3g to os 4.0. It became unbearably slow. I had to back it up, restore it to factory settings and then install the update again. My phones performance improved a little bit, but it is still slower than it was, when it was running os 3.1.3.Well, I am kind of hoping that the new update would solve the slow performace of the iphone. So I would like to know what are peoples feedback after updating iphone 3g to os 4.0.1? Should I update my iphone or I would be risking another hit in its performance?? iphone 3g iOS 4
Yes, I know this is not a new phenom but I am about to throw my phone out the window!Upgraded to iOS4 the day after it was released. By that same Thursday, it turned off and wouldnt turn back on. At the time, I was still on OS 10.4.11. Error 21 over & over again. FINALLY got some manner of contortionist button-holding to get the phone to do a full restore.Phone was good for almost exactly a week. Thursday again, phone turns off and wont come back up. I know it has a full charge... none of the button-holding from the previous week worked. Found out if I just let it sit, unplugged for about 5-6 hours, it will turn on, but only for about 30-60 minutes, then off again.Appt with the Genius Bar last weekend. Tech did a full restore, told me not to put ANYTHING on it for a few days and see what it does. ARGH!! HELLO!!! Phone still turned off after a couple of hours and wouldnt turn on. Nothing on it at ALL!!Been struggling with it all week, turning off. Did about 50-bajillion full restores, and ALWAYS doing the setup as a New Phone and putting nothing back on it. Upgraded all my OS software, did a full restore. Still nothing.I have another Genius Bar appt tomorrow afternoon. I havent even had the phone a whole year yet and it worked beautifully before this godforsaken update. Apple you are reallllly testing my loyalty here. Grr!!Tonight I will try to downgrade back to 3.1.3, but for how long? Most apps are going to be requiring 4.0 to run >__< Funny thing is, my partner has an IDENTICAL phone and all the apps I had, since we sync to the same Mac and nothing is happening to her phone at all. I have seen sporadic accounts of my problem but no resolution (or empathy).I upgraded my iphone 3G to iOS 4.0 the other week. The update process was the slow kind, taking 3+ hours but it worked in the end. It seemed to work alright for a few days. Then I noticed the mute and volume buttons stopped working.I twice tried an restore, not a full restore to factory settings, but to my last saved backup. No success. Today I upgraded to iOS 4.0.1 and there is no change.I would like to avoid a factory reset. Has anyone experienced this problem and ideally found a solution to the problem? Thanks in advance... Thanks, iTunes! In addition to the poor performance 100% of 3G users are experiencing under iOS4, I also noticed that my Push Notifications were not functioning. Wow! So not only do I not get background wallpaper and portrait mode locking - all of which have nothing to do with multitasking - I apparently cant even use my phone in the same basic way I have enjoyed for the past 2 years! I cant tell you how absolutely ecstatic I am that my phone is not a sniveling wussy shell of its former self. I have often thought to myself, Yknow, all my friends with their shiny 3GS models and brand new blackberry phones dont know what theyre missing by having to wait 3 - 10 seconds to press the Send button in an SMS application. But now my dream has come true.Nevertheless, I really was starting to miss Push Notifications (after all, no multitasking, right?) So after 3 or 4 restore attempts, I finally decided to downgrade to v3.1.3. Lo and behold, PUSH WAS WORKING JUST FINE!Well great. I guess that solved that problem. Lets just stay at 3.1.3 for a while... Whats that you say, iTunes? I cant apply my fresh backup to an older version of iOS? But I need all my SMS logs and all that good stuff because, despite the blatant oversight of not time stamping SMS every message, they are still of critical importance to me on occasion.Fine. I had no choice but to upgrade to iOS4 once again. However, after the successful upgrade, I was not prompted to choose a restore point. It simply auto-selected the backup point it created at 3.1.3 a few minutes before. So I restored AGAIN and while it appears that backup points stretching back to 2009 are fully intact, my backups from this afternoon, last night and the day before are GONE! Thanks, iTunes! I am having to go back days and days now. Thankfully I sync my contacts and calendars with gmail over exchange because I can only imagine what would happen if I trusted you with them!I have still yet to see if my Push Notifications will operate back at iOS4.Apple: You had better address these issues at your conference tomorrow. You cant go around haphazardly breaking peoples hardware as some passive way to force us to upgrade to a 3GS or iphone 4. MBP Mac OS X (10.6.4) latest everything
having terrible time updating OS 4 for 3g phone. For some reason the update was not working so had to restart. Now sly i see on the phone is the white Apple logo and the silver bar moving. My iphone 3G is not able to sync anymore. Ive been in a loop for hours. Basically Ive purchased apps and music on my iphone using the same user id and password that I use on my mac iTunes. When I connected the iphone to transfer purchases to back them up I get a window stating that I cannot transfer the purchases because the computer is not authorize, so I go to authorize this computer and input my log in manually (not using the cookies) and the mac tells me that the computer IS authorized so I go back to transfer purchases and it starts all over again. Ive been trying to back up for months, now Ive amassed 32 apps and songs that Ill have to either buy again or loose if I have to restore. (I know I should have stopped buying on the iphone when I first realized the problem.)What am I doing wrong? If there are discussions already open that I should look at let me know. Thanks! iphone 3G iphone OS 3.1.3
Okay, listen everyone, I need and hopefully whoever besides me is having this problem will have their question(s) answered. My problem after upgrading to iOS4 is that my custom ringtones and music are not properly being synced to my phone from Itunes. It shows that my ringtones and music are synced to my phone and when I go to Settings/Sounds to locate my ringtones, it shows that they are there but doesnt play the ringtones after clicking on the desire one. As for my music, after clicking on the iPod icon and waiting for my phone to update my playlist(s) I get the message that there are no contents. I have tried to resolved this issue with Apple Support and to no avail. Please anyone who out there is havong this same problem help. Desperately looking for some advice and keep in my mind that I have several restore to fix this problem and nothing has helped. Feel free to ask any questions.... PC Windows Vista

I´ve read a lot of posts from people who have lost their contacts and messages when updating to os4. I did too and paniced but the solution is pretty simple. Turn the phone off and then turn it back on. A progress bar will indicate the restore process and when finished all will be as before with the new os. Hopefully someone can help me! I am at a loss of what to do with my phone...I have an iphone 3G which is currently running OS 3.1.3. Tonight I tried to check my facebook and it repeatedly booted me back to home screen. I tried restarting and it continued to act in the same manner. I decided to uninstall the app then went to download it and it said installed. I turned off the phone and this is when the real problems began. It sat at the little circular dial for about 5 minutes and wouldnt shut down so I held the home button and power button until the apple screen appeared. Ever since then, the phone will not boot past the apple screen. The apple appears for a minute, then goes right back to black. I have tried rebooting it and it shows the apple then a quick flash of the connect to itunes screen then goes back to black. I tried connecting it to my computer to restore and it wont even appear in itunes. I seriously have no clue what to do!!! Please help!!! acer aspire 5535 Windows Vista
u know right after re doing the update (restore) when the phone is fresh with 4.0 and it has a new app that when touched it has a few of the iphones apps like a pic of home and a few other icons? what happens to that when I re-STORE from my backup? I just updated my firmware for my 3G iphone and after completion I noticed that some aspects of the update were missing such as folders, simplified Mail, etc. I did the restore method of updating my phone because the other method was taking too long during the backup procedure, and Im not sure if this is the reason I do not have folders, iBook, etc.Can anyone help me figure out this problem? Has anyone figured out how to restore a non-jailbroken iphone 3G to 3.1.3?There are lots of links for people who had jailbroken their iphones earlier. But what about those of us who never jailbroke the iphone and just want to get back to 3.1.3?And dont, please, suggest doing either a hard reset, or a restore and backup of iOS 4. Both my sister and I have experienced our phones to be extremely slow after updating them. The messages take a few seconds to open, same with the apps. Also while typing, nothing will show up then all of a sudden everything you had typed will show up. It just seems like everything on the phone is slow. Ive done some research on it, and everyone said to restore it. The people at Apple said not to do that unless its the last resort. Is anyone else experiencing this? iphone 3G
Hi,Ive ordered an iphone4, and my current iphone 3G is now going to my girlfriend. I would like to completely reset it to factory defaults before passing it on. Ive read that the best way to do this is to use the restore function in itunes, and choose set up as a new phone. The thing is, Im worried that this will also install the IOS4 firmware during the process which is not what I want. Is there a way of forcing itunes to restore to the 3.1.3 firmware while using the restore funtion?Any advice on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks. iphone 3G Windows Vista
I have followed various suggestions on several threads here and on other forums. I restored the phone to a LIKE NEW restore, no solution. Downgraded to OS3, no solution, Wifi just doesnt work at all.Changed security settings on my router, same thingTried 3 different routers, still cant see any network. Wi-Fi just keeps searching and never finds a single host to connect to. Everything else works fine, just no Wi-Fi. By the way, this phone has never been hacked or anything, so thats not the problem. Also, for the record my Wi-Fi worked perfect prior to upgrading to iOS4Message was edited by: DeeperImage iphone 3G iOS 4

Yesterday, without any damage being done to the phone (dropping it, etc) I noticed my lock button stopped working. I thought perhaps the software was just being buggy and decided to wait until I got home to restore it. Before plugging the phone in, I checked the other buttons and discovered the ringer/silent button and the two volume buttons didnt function either. Only the home button worked. After a restore on itunes and resetting all settings within the phones Reset tab itself, nothing has changed. Has anyone else had this exact problem? I find it odd that all of the external buttons arent functioning at the same time. iphone 3G Mac OS X (10.6.3)
Hello all,I have an iphone 3G 8gig which I am perfectly happy with. I want to do a restore to fix a few buggy things. But when I click restore I am warned that that the newest version of the iphone software will be installed. I am assuming they mean IOS4 -- and this kind of comes off as a threat to those of us happy with the 3G and IOS3.What do I do? I dont want to become one of the legions of iphone 3G users with slow response times and sticky keypads. I saw one other thread on this topic -- no answer -- and I did not wish to hijack it. iMac Intel Core Duo 2.6 GHz, MacBook White 2.0 Ghz Mac OS X (10.6.4) 4 GB Ram (iMac), 2.0 GB (iBook)

Why I did this I dont know. While in SLO I tried to connect to a tether option presented as a wifi network on my iphone 3 g running ios 4.0Now the wifi does not see any networks at all.Went to 3 geniuses so far and tried a network reset, an all reset, a simple restore, a two finger restore, a pull the sim card and try again, face the east and say please three times, but still the iphone doesnt see the wifi networks.Apple genius here says hardware problem but why from tethering???any suggestions? beyond the $200 apple trade in?Ken Newton, BeigeMT, 6100, Lombard, Pismo, Mirror Door Mac OS X (10.4.11) 600/27 Scanner, 12/640 Printer, iPod touch
I tried updating to IOS 4, and it got stuck. And then it sort of... I dunno, exited from the update process or something. Basically, itunes no longer registers the iphone as being connected to the computer, and the iphone itself is stuck with a loading bar on the screen, not moving. I cant turn it off, I cant even turn the screen off, I cant even restore the iphone, because according to itunes, tis not connected tot he computer. What do? Compaq Presario CQ61 Windows 7
