iPhone 3G as just phone

Is it possible to use the iPhone 3G as just a phone? Ive read other forum posts about people turning off their edge/3g networks to prevent their iPhone from connecting to the internet and at he same time retaining the voice plan. I was told by the ATT CSR that the iPhone 3G uses the internet to make and receive phone calls and removing it would be suicide because they charge $10 a kilobyte, is this true? I just need people to confirm what the truth is and such. My friend wants to know if he can remove his iPhone 3G data plan and still be able to make phone calls with his iPhone 3Gthanks! Need help with my email iPhone 3G

Just upgraded to the 3g and Im currently trying to set up my Gmail account on the phone. It will not let me and when I click on the email icon the only thing that shows is the inbox colum. it will try to get my emails for about a minute and then a message saying connection to the server imap.gmail.com failed. My Microphone wont work during calls iPhone 3G

Im having an odd problem with my iPhone--I can hear people when they call me or when I call them, but they cant hear me unless I use my bluetooth headset. I first cleaned out the headset port with blasts of compressed air but no change. Next I did a reset, then finally a complete restore, but no dice.Even more strange is that I can still use the microphone with google to do voice searches. So, no phone calls, but I can use the google app. Is there anything else I have forgotten to do? It seems to be a software issue. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Black MacBook Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I frequent this area...Outer Banks of NC, but havent been down in a while. Not much of anything in this area except sand and water. My first gen iPhone works, but only a slight reception. I see on the At&t coverage map that they have 3G all over the Buxton area. Activation screen comes up on an already activated phone iPhone 3G

Ive had an active iPhone 3g since July. Twice in the last 24 hrs: once when home button pressed to awaken after just being in my pocket and the other time when powering on after being off for the night, I got the screen graphic showing connect to iTunes to activate (graphic of cord and iTunes logo) as if the phoe were brand new, with no service and only the ability to make a emergency call from the keypad (after slide). Luckily I was near my computer both time but may not be if it happens again. Once attached to computer and device recognized by iTunes, the phone screen says iPhone activated and everything is back to normal. All my apps, tunes, contacts, etc are still there.I take real good care of the phone. Never dropped; usually in my pocket when not in use. Software says up-to-date.Never happened previous to yesterday and nothing different that day. Anyone else having this issue? Any recommendations? Apple support said to restore the phone via iTunes. What a hassle, with all the backing up I have to do. But if that is the only recourse, Ill have to do. Its like, well weve never heard of that one so just restore it - an easy answer. Anyway to use Gps to track lost phone iPhone

Unfortunetly, this being the second iphone i purchase due to having my previous one stolen, i then agian misplaced it. I do know this one was not stolen but was completly my fault. This brings me to my question of, how come apple cannot locate my phone using the amazing gps the phone already had available on it?. A charge would be completly appropriate, but i believe it would just bring somthing more to the table. Everyone at one point either misplaces or reports their phone stolen, so why not a nifty idea of having the phone completly trackable so no one would ever even think of stealing this phone again? i think this is a great idea, but perhaps i am over looking an application that is already available. please, and references or commments, i am more than happy to listen to. iphone 3G Windows XP

Why my phone say Call Failed when dialing number iPhone 3G

Ok, Im using 2.2 software version on my iPhone 3G. Its not unlocked or anything. The problem started last night, when I tried to call someone in my contact list. Ill dial the number and it automatically goes to Call Failed, it doesnt dial or even attempt to. I can sends text messages, receive phone calls, and get online. Just cant make phone calls.Heres what I did to try to fix it.First I cut the phone off and powered back on. Then tried a soft reset by holding the home button and power button down. After that didnt work I restored it to factory settings, which didnt work. Then I restored from a backup, but it didnt work either. Ive tried everything people have said on the internet, that doesnt require unlocking the phone.Please help!!!!**edit** - Ive also removed the SIM and restored to factory settings. iPhone Outgoing Voice Garbled on 3G and EDGE

About 3 days ago, I started to experience an issue with my 3G iPhone running 2.2 software. On incoming and outgoing calls I can hear the person on the other end but my voice is garbled and/or filled with a lot of static. This occurs on both the AT&T EDGE and 3G networks with and without the factory-provided headset. However, if I switch the speakerphone function on, both parties can hear each other normally. What I thought was particularly interesting is that when I use Truphone to make a VoIP call, everything functions normally as well. While I first thought that this could be some sort of hardware issue, the last test made it seem more along the lines of a software problem. I have powered on/off the phone, rebooted the phone, restored it to backup and restored to a new phone all with the same result. Has anyone else experienced this issue and been able to resolve it? I have an appointment at the Genius Bar on Friday but am hoping to be able to resolve this on my own.Thanks. HP Windows XP

So my phone got stolen. *****.Basically what Im wanting to do is get a used iPhone 3g that hasnt been unlocked, go get a new 3G SIM from ATT and start using it in the used phone. iPhone sound not working on games 3G

I have the iPhone 3G. The sound for the games worked when I first got the new phone but now it doesnt.. I have done everything I know to get the sound to work (turn up volume, sound settings, etc).. Still nothing..The iPod feature plays sound through the external speakers so I can still listen to my music files. The telephone part works.. Even Pandora will play sound.. Home button doesnt work iPhone

When I press on the Home button, nothing happens. When I press on it a second time, it takes me to Favorites as if I had done a double-click on the Home button.The phone still can send and receive calls, and can sync with my computer. I just cant get to my home screen.The phone also doesnt power down. Holding the power button does nothing until I release it, after which it goes into a sleep mode.Trying to reset the phone doesnt work. WOW I hate App Store software updates iPhone 3G

Does anyone elses phone take forever to update an application? Has anyone else updated an App only have it send your phone into a reset? I just updated Texas Holdem on my phone. After 10 minutes of waiting for the thing to update, I re-synced my phone so it would copy onto my iMac and WOW, a half hour later and the meter hasnt budged. Not to mention that I had to make more the 245mb of memory available to upgrade a 129mb app(according to the app store). Whats that all about?! Saving contacts to S card iPhone

Does anyone know if the 3G saves contacts to the SIM card automatically? I was able to import the contacts from my old SIM card but I also want make sure they save to the new one, as well as save my future contacts. Most of my phones have saved to SIM automatically, but my last phone did not, which I didnt discover until something went wrong with it. New Headphones iPhone 3G

Theyre pretty much identical to the ones that came with the phone with the only addition being the volume control. It would be pretty nice to use those to control the volume to I wouldnt have to take the phone out of my pocket. Iphone takes nearly an hour to back up and sync

Can anyone shed some light on this......both my boyfriend and I have iphones and we have a macbook. The main user account is mine and then I created a user account for my boyf so that he can sync his iphone independent of mine, with his own itunes etc. My iphone backs up and syncs really really quickly but when we try to sync his phone on his user account it takes at least 3/4 of an hour and sometimes an hour +.Does anyone know why this might be? poor service iPhone 3G

I would like to say that i was quite unhappy with the customer care. I have been an Apple customer for years, and as a teacher I fitted out my previous school with apple computers and currently trying to do the same at my current school. On of the points i use when convincing admin to purchase apple equipment is due to the good customer care I have received in the past, however no this no longer seems to be the case. My Iphone has a crack on the screen that has been there almost since new and it has not caused any problems. Now 6 months later i am having what I believe to be an unrelated fault I am being told that I am no longer covered by any warranty. I explained to the service people that there was no previous faults that may be related to the crack, but was told that they only have my word for that and that my word was not good enough. I understand that you must have policies in place but I am a long term supporter of your product and very disappointed. As admin staff know of my phone (I use it for much business use at school) and i return to school in a few weeks saying that it failed and apple would not cover it under their warranty, my standing argument for apple due to your quality of care will be useless.

Txt Msg Alert Bug iPhone

Ive noticed that when I receive over 50 txt messages from a single person the MSG alert never seems to go away. Like when I get 105 unread messages, I go and check the 105 messages and it seems to subtract 50 and still says I have 55 unread messages. So then I hit Load Earlier Messages and it still says I have the same amount of unread messages.I clear the messages in the chat and it still says that there are 55 unread messages. When I check my phone it shows that there are no unread messages (b/c there are no blue dots near any conversations).The alert seems to go away only after removing the chat log all together from the text message menu.If someone at Apple can look into this it would be greatly appreciated. Problem updating to 2.2 iPhone 3G

1. I have now updated my Iphone three times. This last update was to 2.2 from 2.1. My Lenovo X300 WIN XP PRO will not finish the installation it just hangs checking the phone. I have to connect the phone to another computer preferably a Mac and then complete the recovery process. I know many others have had this problem. Any hope for a solution?2. The second problem was the most frustrating. After updating to 2.2 my downloaded programs had disappeared. During the software upgrade process it did a successful backup and I restored after updating (otherwise I wouldn’t have had my contact music etc.). iPhone 3G-Dead on Arrival

On 24Dec2008, I decided to do a handset upgrade with Vodafone (in Australia, we have mobile phone contracts, and to keep you with them the telcos will offer deals if you sign for another 24 months) to get a 16Gb iPhone 3G.I took it home, plugged it into the AC charger, then I plugged it into my laptop.Nothing. The Apple Logo appeared on the iPhone screen, but (the latest version of) iTunes didnt open, and my computer (a Windows XP OS) did not recognise that a device had been plugged in. I changed USB ports, to no avail. I got my sons iPod Nano, plugged it in, and recognised immediately.I went online, saw lots of hints and tips, and tried them (including holding the Off and Home buttons until the device turns off), still nothing.An important note - I have not attempted any hacks - I am quite happy to use the iPhone on my Vodafone network.So my Christmas was ruined.I took the phone to my local Vodafone dealer, only to be told I had to take it to the dealer that I got it from. I took it to the Apple shop, and after he moaned about people buying Apple products from somewhere else and expecting Apple to support it, he at least tried to initialise it for me. No luck.So I rang the place that I got it from (they are about 70 km away from where I live, so I wasnt going to drive to them for no reason), and they said they would order me a new one. It is now the 7th of January, and they are telling me maybe next week.Is my iPhone truly dead, or is there a secret thing I havent tried yet? I am almost ready to go get a Blackberry Storm. iPhone 3G GPS

I cant seem to get the GPS function on my phone to work. When I plot two locations, it just gives me a route that I can click through, like the maps feature on the old iPhone. Is there any way to turn GPS on? Ive searched through the settings but cant find anything. Thanks in advance for any help.

Reboot Iphone once day

So I got my new 3G iphone one week before XMAS and after a couple of days I noticed that: 1. my phone is unresponsive after finishing a call. (requires a reboot occurs at least once a day)2. Apps close all of a sudden when in use. I took my iphone to the apple store last week to the King of Prussia store and I was told that this was occurring because the iphone software was corrupted and that a system restore would fix this. A couple of hours later the same problems kept occurring. I restored my phone two more times at home, but I still kept having the same problems. I also synch my phone daily. I made another appoint for today and a different guy at the genius bar told me that this occurring because my system memory is low and that caused my reboots. He even said that everyone that has an Iphone or any smartphone should reboot their phone daily. I was really puzzled and upset that he told me I have to reboot my phone once a day. I have never heard this before and I wanted to know if other people have been told this, or was this guy just full of it. My iphone was replaced and I have not seen this problem occur so far. iphone replaced under warranty will sync-ing bring my contacts etc back

Sorry that was a little vague due to space limitations.. Basically, I got a replacement phone, and the guy at the genius bar said that my data would be restored to it when I sync it. Im a little concerned because sync-ing just got the black data off my phone when I had installed enterprise support months ago. so I thought Id ask if I should be doing anything special for the first sync to get as much info back in the phone as possible. side question: I noticed I have none of my address book despite using my old sim card. Dropping Calls iPhone 3G

This problem just started yesterday morning. I am unable to make or receive phone calls on the AT&T network. When receiving a call, the phone says I have full signal. When I try to answer the call, the signal bars fall to nothing and then it searches for the network. This happens on both the Edge and 3G areas. When making a call, once again the phone is telling me I have full signal, then it drops to nothing. The call is failed, then searches for the network.I am able to text message, the data is not working. I have restarted, reset, removed the sim card. Im out of ideas. Just a side note, while on GPS in 3G areas, my current location is telling me I am in Cleveland. The problem with that is I live in Delaware. I am not sure if these are related problems.Does anyone have a clue what the heck is going on with this thing. I really dont want to replace it again, this being my second iPhone. I have had my iphone for a while and no problems. Then in the last few days I have had nothing but heartache trying to sync. Ok, the replacement phone is working good, but when I sync to my itunes, the system made me restore the phone to factory settings and erased the applications that were left on the iphone, sad but have not a problem with that, the problem is that the favorites screen is all black, nothing comes out, just a black screen. can someone please help?Thanks. Iphone Monopoly Application wont open

I have downloaded the Monopoly application and it wont open. When i select it on my iphone it just flashes up and automatically closes again. I have tried everything to try and get it to work.I have deleted Monopoly and re-downloaded it, I have deleted it from my iphone and re-synced it, I have turned off my phone and turned it on again, I have delete all other applications and just tried to put Monopoly on my phone, I have restored my whole phone, I have called Apple support and they told me to try all of these above things and more, nothing seems to get it to work. i have tried everything i can think of.Any ideas? iphone Windows XP

iPhone 3G Speaker phone microphone mute issue

I have noticed a fault with my iPhone 3G when I use Speakerphone. As soon as I select Speakerphone mode I can hear the caller but the caller cannot hear me. They hear no sound, not even faintly. The microphone seems to mute. However, when I switch back and put the unit up to me ear, they can hear me and I can hear them. When I got the iphone this function definitely worked. I now mostly use a Bluetooth headset so only recently (post software 2.2 upgrade) noticed the speakerphone defect. It sounds like a software defect rather than a microphone fault to me. Have tried a Restore but this has not cured the problem. Has anybody had a similar problem? I will call O2/Carphone Warehouse if nobody has encountered this issue, however, when I contacted them to question the lack of PUSH e-mail, before the last software upgrade, O2 tried to tell me that it was my e-mail provider that was at fault! Please help My itunes just stops during sync but says Sync In Progress iPhone

Ok Ive tried syncing my iphone to itunes and it just says Sync in Progress. It never stops. Now it makes it through the Backing up iPhone portion but as soon as it gets to syncing contacts, it just sits there saying its Syncing contacts with iphone. Now Im not sure why its doing this, this just happened out of nowhere, so Ive even restored the phone twice, once as a new phone and then again with the option it left from restoring it the first time. It syncs the music, apps, and videos when I uncheck everything in the Info tab, such as contacts, calendar, etc. So its something to do with everything in the Info tab. Synching Irritations. iPhone 3G

Two really annoying things that continue to drive me up the wall:1) Every time I want to transfer pictures onto my phone or maybe just even one new song, why does iTunes force me to do a complete backup of my phone? What would take 10 seconds ends up taking 20 minutes for absolutely no reason.2) Why when I opt NOT to sync ALL of my apps, does it tell me it will REMOVE Them from my phone completely? No! Why would I want them DELETED? Since when does not copying over something that is ALREADY ON THE phone mean that I want them deleted completely from the phone? It doesnt make any sense. None. If I dont have them all checked, it will delete the one not checked.I tried to NOT sync my apps so that I could speed up the process of just syncing my photos. So it tells me its going to delete all my apps if I do that. iTunes is such a miserable failure in the world of Apple/Mac which dominates the logic/useability world in every other arena. It continues to confound me the absolute poor structure, logic, and programming of their flagship software app.I mean seriously, how hard is it for this application to know that its already got all my apps both in itunes and on the phone? Every time I connect it, it starts copying over my apps all over again. Why? Is this 1983 when it cant tell if the app has been updated and needs synching? If someone can give me some input on these items I would appreciate it. VAIO

ok so when my phone is awake and i get a call it has two options accept and decline or something similar. however when my phone is asleep and i get a call the only thing that comes up is slide to answer and i have no way of rejecting the call. iphone stuck when first syncing

i recently purchased an iphone 3g 8gb. loved it and everything worked flawlessly with it. i released that the 8gb wasnt enough so i went out and exchanged it for a 16gb phone instead. so i came home to sync it with my itunes and its stuck in the sycing stage. its stuck on syncing contacts. i have restored it and tried to uncheck the options to sych with and no matter what it gets stuck syncing anything. can anyone help me out with this. id like to be able to use my new iphone instead of watching it sycn. it is using software 2.2 please help! imac 24" Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Travel question. iPhone 3G

I live in Seattle and am traveling to London next week. Ill be using a calling card from my hotel-- so I dont want to be charged with roaming fees or phone charges or data fees.How do I set up my iPhone to be of use to me while Im there. Should I turn on Airplane mode the whole time and simply have access to contacts and addresses, are there other settings I should know about? Dropping to GPRS during call iPhone 3G

While on a long call that started on 3G, I noticed my computer speakers suddenly started chattering at me, so I moved the phone and continued the call.At the end of the call the phone had the blue dot for GPRS where the 3G dot should have been, which means that sometime during the call the phone fell off 3G back to Edge (perhaps) and then to GPRS. I was connected by wifi as well, so I didnt really NEED a 3G connection for data, but I was surprised to see it fall all the way back to GPRS.All of this was seamless to me (other than the chatter, so the iPhone handoff issues from the old 2.0 days are clearly fixed and handoff is pretty seamless.The question I have, is do other people see this fall back all the way to GPRS during calls? Problems with iPhone

I have many problems using my new 3G iPhone and its really starting to annoy me.1) When you go into a lift and the reception of the phone cuts off - It takes absolutely ages for the signal to be restored. Around 5-10 minsSometimes if you leave your phone idle on the table and the reception cuts off - it could take up to 2 hrs....and i end up with 15-20 voice messages.Is it just my phone or does it happen similar to other users as well?and 2) - by far the most annoying is the texting function. I can text and receive a text from someone no problem but when they reply back.....I cannot see their name. e.g. I go and Text John on 12345678....and then when John replies to me...I get the number 44-12345678...(if in the UK). The phone doesnt recognise that it is John...When you hit the call button - it doesnt call John cos the country code should be +44.Same thing with Hong Kong ppl texting me - always I get replies starting with 852 instead of +852. I dont end up seeing who from my phone book is texting me and have to end up looking up the number..any remedies?Thanks Other OS

iPhone 3G wont backup.

Ive had this problem for awhile. When I plug my iPhone in and iTunes opens it shows it backing up. The status bar grows real slowly and then basically stops at a little less then half way. Why is this? I already deleted the current backup, but I am still having this issue when I try to sync. I also restarted my phone but still no luck.I always end up clicking the x next to where it says backing up since it never backsup.Any ideas? MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.5.5)

iPhone top sleepwake button not working Apple Logo screen at startup

I have the original iphone. I have two problems, both just happened tonight at the same time. For seemingly no reason just my iphone external top sleep/wake button is not working. I tried powering the phone off and back on. I tried resetting my iphone, and restoring it. I made sure my Iphone software is up to date. None of these remedies have fixed the button. The button doesnt look broken, it pushes in and out, it just doesnt work anymore. Second problem is, after I power my iphone off and then back on, the Apple logo screen will continue to flash on and off indefinitely. The only way to get my home screen to appear is to connect my iphone to my computer. Then it wants to sync. After syncing it then asks if I want to power off or cancel. Huh, why does is it doing that? To turn my iphone off I am pressing my Home button down until it shuts off, since I cant power off with the top black button. Is that the reason my phone is having the second problem, because I am powering off with the Home button? Could it be my second problem is not a problem?My iphone 1 year warranty is over. I cant call Apple Care, there is no apple store near me. I need a solution I can do at home myself. Please help. Even if you think the answer is obvious please suggest it to me. Before tonight nothing was wrong with my iPhone. It all started after I let my 6 and 7 year old nephews play with google Maps on my phone for like 10 minutes - supervised. I consider myself to be a pretty Apple tech savvy guy, yet I cant figure out if they broke my iphone somehow, nor can I fix these two problems. Please help! cant hear without headphones iPhone 3G

I have just encountered a problem where my iphone 3G will not make any noise through the standard ear piece. When I adjust the volume it seems to think that the headphones are plugged in (which they arent). If i change to speaker phone it works fine (in speaker mode) and if i actually plug the headphones it works as wellanyone lwith the same issue Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Battery Life suddenly very bad iPhone 3G

Hi all --Had my iPhone 3G since release day. Have not had battery problems (not anything out of the ordinary) until a couple of days ago. Noticed recently that the phone will often get warm even when asleep, and the battery life has gone down to ~3 hrs of very light use (listening to iPod for 20 mins or so, making 1-2 calls). Previously the phone would go pretty much a whole day of mixed use on a full charge.It almost seems as though an internet or GPS process is hung and draining the battery, though Ive reset it multiple times to no avail. Did a restore this afternoon - this also seems to have had no effect. Have maybe a dozen apps installed at most, have deleted a few that I thought might be culprits, but again no luck. Anyone have any thoughts? Can provide any additional detail. phone is at the most recent OS, cant think of what it might be. Mac OS X (10.4.6)

iTunes not recognizing iPhone 3G

On a MacPro 2.8GHz, running iTunes 8.02...Suddenly, my computer nor iTunes is recognizing my i{hone...have followed ALL instructions in troubleshooting assistant, resetting iPhone, erasing all settings and data, re-installing iTunes...nothing works. Cannot do a restore because the phone is not recognized in iTunes....Had someone at the Apple store pllug iPhone into store computer to see if it might be a USB cable issue....worked fine and began to synch with store computer...bought new USB cable and still no Iphone on iTunes....have rebotted both IPhone and Computer several times....help, please MacPro Mac OS X (10.5.6) iTunes 8.02

Bug with Restrictions iPhone

I attempted to enable restrictions for Explicit music on my phone, but when i enable restrictions, it enables restrictions for everything like safari, youtube etc although i have disabled the restrictions for these applications. Think this is a bug and was wondering if anyone knew if a fix would be out for this soon or am i missing something here. Does anyone else have this issue?
