No shortcuts to Settings viz. Bluetooth Network like ONOFF switch iPhone 3G

Why iPhone does not have shortcuts to Settings viz., Bluetooth, Network like ON/OFF switch. This feature is available almost in all cheaper mobiles which is available in road side market! This is very essential and without this it's really irritating to get into Settings everytime. Why Apple is not providing this feature? Is there any reason technical that Apple can defend with. I believe there were some site supporting this and some applications (Apps Icon, Icon Project, etc.,) in iTunes stores. Seeing the descriptions, infact, I have purchased couple of applications but did not have the above metioned function after downloading it. I was cheated by your fake applications projecting wrong benefits. Will Apple be responsible for this?

My iPhone 4 keeps restarting it's self Won't Charge

"APPLE HARDWARE/SOFTWARE PRODUCT PROBLEMS WITH MINE & WORLDWIDE" 1.24-06-2011As from Friday 24th June 2011 when I purchased my iPhone 4 it Won't Charge, stays in the red & go above 5% even after 2-3+ days no difference charging plus I tried x4 different Apple charges but it made no difference at all to the problems with the iPhone 4. 2.24-06-2011iPhone 4 keeps restarting it's self every 30 seconds 3.24-06-2011I do a system restore many times via iTunes 4.I do a hard reset by holding the power & home button for 45sec x5 times 5.I do a battery calibration by holding the power & home button for 25secas I'm told via online forum 6.Just finely get the iPhone 4 updated to latest 4.3.3 OS via iTunes 7.I leave iPhone 4 to completely dis charge where it won't start at all & then recharge it where charge holds for a couple of hours but then only to turn itself off when the power meter is reading 64% but won't restart after pressing power button. 8.So I pug the iPhone 4 back on its charger for a couple of hours but it still reads only 1% battery power so I do another by holding the power & home button for 25 seconds as I'm told via online forum up to which the battery meter reads 96% as to will not charge no higher than 93-96% but again the seconds later the iPhone 4 again starts keeping restarting it's self every 30 seconds nonstop all over again. 9.Nothing has help with this piece of Apple ****. 10.Reading more online forum where this is a very common problem with it seem that all iPhone models, iPad’s, iPod 4 it also had similar problems as did mine. 11.Just finely get the iPhone 4 updated to latest x4.more times of the iPhone OS via iTunes which has made NO DIFFERENCE to the continued problems with this APPLE PIECE OF CRAP. 12.01-09-2011 @ 8:08pmI plug it in to my computer where it Shows it’s charging a CHARGING icon in the power bar at the top right hand corner of the screen & then a PowerPoint icon in the power bar at the top right hand corner of the screen where then continues to restart its self every 30 seconds. 13.01-09-2011Now after a doing a battery calibration by holding the power & home button for 25secas I'm told via online forum. But this time each time it restarts 90% charge, 85% charge, 80% charge, 76% charge & that continues like that again, again & again, what a piece of CRAP… 14.01-09-2011Again I plug it in to my computer where it Shows it’s charging a CHARGING icon in the power bar at the top right hand corner of the screen & then a PowerPoint icon in the power bar at the top right hand corner of the screen where then continues to restart its self every 30 seconds 15.01-09-2011I Plug it in & once more I do a system restore via Apple iTunes to see once more if it will make any difference, like that will do anything ‘YEA RIGHT”.. And the answer is “NO WHAT A SURPRISE” Now showing 74% charge, continuing to restart every 30seconds 16.01-09-2011 72% charge, continuing to restart every 30seconds & then showing a PowerPoint icon in the power bar at the top right hand corner of the screen where then continues to restart its self every 30 seconds. 17.01-09-2011Then this happens during Sync after a do a system restore via Apple iTunes  18.Now showing 74% charge & still continuing to restart every 30seconds. 19.Won’t charge at all while turned on 20.01-05-2012Still won’t charge when plugged in plus there is NO CHARGE SYMBOL on the screen to show its charging & so it doesn’t charge... 21.19-05-2012  Now upgraded to iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1 & it now continues to REBOOT/RESTART every three to five second regardless of whether it’s plugged in or unplugged NOW & the ONLY way I can get some sort of charge into it is to turn off the iPhone 4 completely but only after it already plugged in to the power & after it’s already restarted it’s self again buy holding the POWER BUTTON down plus flicking the Phone shutdown touch screen button across But still not fixing it’s problem regardless of how many times I’ve upgraded the iPhones 4 iOS MAKING THE iPhone or any iPhone so far totally the most useless mobile phone I’ve ever had/owned & I’ve had a lot of mobiles over the years that when I get them I test every feature they have to the max in order to make sure there are no problems with it but this time I’ve discovered that Apple iPhones are a piece of TOTAL CRAP and contacting Apple is imposable to do & Vodafone is almost just as bad & certainly not buy email HA?

sms US to Australia iPhone

Probably a dumb question, but what will it cost to use imessage to sms from USA to Australian mobiles?

I can only phone mobile numbers and cannot connect to landline numbers iphone 4s

I cannot phone landlines on my iphone 4s but can phone mobiles. I just gives like a short busy tone then cuts off but the person I am trying to call is not on the phone so should not give busy tone.

DTMF Tones iPhone

I hope this may help some peeps on here, it has worked for me,  we use a remote dialling code to divert our office landlines to mobiles, we have had awful trouble with the iphones in doing this with the number stored as a contact, We also have trouble dialling the number direct from the keypad it still comes up with error and says the number has not been recognised. I have managed to sort out how to remedy this for us on this end and i will give an example below, the 'p' represents a pause (numbers changed for security) original phonebook contact stored, please notice the pauses 'p' only the first single pause 01223495684p*65*4530*01223456456*07555456456# the new number now stored in the phonebook with the extra pauses 'p' 01223495684pp*65p*4530p*01223456456p*07555456456#  as you can see we dial a landline number and then give a pause for the next tone to cut in, then we enter the overall divert code, after this we enter the pin code followed by the landline number to divert and finally the mobile number that will be taking the calls and finishing off with hash. all our other phones except the iphone will dial this number and work correctly with one pause at the beginning, I have now tried thios with two pauses at the beginning and one pause between each section and it now works fine, This has cured our problem using the io5 iphones 4s. we could not dial these numbers with the iphones for nothing, all other phones work fine. When you have a bluetooth headset connected the problem is even worse. this has cured our problem and hope this helps you all also

My problems after iOS5 iPhone 4

Like so many others, I've been having problems with my iphone after updating to iOS5 (I have iphone 4). Many users having been complaining about the quick battery loss but I'm also having serious issues with my phone heating up. Ever since I did the update my iphone has been giving me this warning that my phone can't be used before it cools down. Also it took about 3 hours for the battery to be fully charged and then I checked it in less than two hours and the battery was almoust finished plus it had the heating warning on.. even it wasn't used and it was just lying in my bag. I've been trying to follow these different instructions that I've found from these discussions but so far no luck I was thinking of taking my phone to repare but I don't know if they can help with this kind of problem. But I'm relieved that I'm not only one with this problem.. but I hate it because I can't use my phone at all

OS4 x Viseeo for Mercedes Benz iPhone 4

I am very surprised I cant undo my iPhones software update. The whole thing began when I updated my iPhones software to OS4. The problem is, before that I didnt have any problem with the handset and now two big issues:My iPhone no longer synchronizes his contacts with my cars memory. So, I cant see my contacts in my car, when they ring me numbers comes on my dash but random numbers and special characters. Plus my ringtone comes out so loudly in my stereo system, scaring me sometimes! And as a Mercedes owner we dont have a wide range of cradles available to buy and the most used Viseeo MB-2 is the one that doesnt synchronizes. Problem is MB-2 is for the latest cars, so, nothing at the moment is as updated as this one.Found this note http://www.itjustworks.co.uk/viseeo-mercedes-bluetooth-help-support.htm and called Apple to double check the info. So, theres no way of downgrading my mobiles software back to 3.1 said by an Apple Care agent;Said that My only choice would be to buy a second hand iPhone, not upgraded one! and Keep it away from iTunes Upgrades. The other big issue is that now, my mobile is veeeeeery slow!! Launching apps, contacts, txts, mails.... everything so slow!!Anyone have any idea, comments to help me out here? 3G iOS 4

Me my iPhone and iOS 4.1

Well I took the plunge Thursday fortnight ago (9th Sept.) and walked into the local O2 in Lisburn and bought the phone with an 18 (£30) month contract and initial outlay of £229; overall it will be approximately £769 or $1,206. Needless to say I expected the phone to rival the sculpture of David by Michelangelo for awe and the functionality of the VCR and its necessity during its era. The former quality I was not disappointed in however given the price I thought or rather expected that it would have done everything my old Nokia 6300 did, the same as any other smartphone on the market, and more to distinguish it from its rivals as a brand name that has substance and more to equal its brand. In my old Nokia 6300 for instance I could write texts prescriptively (I know it suggests words in iPhone but how do you add to the dictionary?), use emoticons, and use accented characters – maybe this is there but I have yet to find it. Can anyone provide guidance?Bluetooth data between other smart phones or mobiles – can this be done for my friends are unwilling or unable to buy the iPhone due to economic reasons etc.? Overall I cannot blame Apple for its marketing, after all that’s what a company exists for; to make money and its product is good but having bought the iPhone 4 and the iCase that will no doubt cure it of the ills that it has/n’t got I still get that empty feeling as if I am waiting for something special to happen. Wow-can all messages be undeleted for 12 months from keyboard cache iPhone

I would really like to hear from the experts on this one. The article in which a wrongly accused is acquitted of rape charges because of deleted messages that were retrieved from his iPhone http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/rape-charges-dropped-after-deleted-messages-recovered--from-iphone-20100727-10ueq.htmlThe article quotes police investigators that state: Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones since 2007 but few users know how much information they collect. The keyboard logging cache means an expert can retrieve anything typed on it for up to 12 months. Its internal mapping and geotags attached to photos indicate where a user has been. An iPhone has up to 32 gigabytes of data that can be imaged or decoded with the right equipment, Mr Coulthart said, even if it has been deleted.I previously thought that deleted messages (deleted prior to a backup sync) were really deleted. This seems to suggest otherwise. Any experts or developers care to answer this one? This is really relevant to privacy and also applies to used phones that are given away as gifts...Cheers Klaus iPhone 3G iOS 4

iPhone battery keeps jumping after calibration 3G

Hey, Ive had this iPhone 3G since January of 2009 and its been great, never dropped it, kept it in a case and etc.But the battery life has been bad, Im on T-mobiles network running on edge as well. My problem is, I calibrated the battery 4 times this week and still this happens, The phone will die, it wont turn on, but after I plug it in, it will say I have 33% left, sometimes it varies and its never constant. It never stays at the red area and charges, it just goes up to the green part and continues charging. Why is it doing this? I want to find out why and have it serviced if there is something wrong. Not anymore...Now I have to double up my phone numbers for contacts as iPhone doesnt recognise the international extension. Never had this issue on any phone, seems a pretty straight forward whats going on? any advice or info? iPhone 3G iPhone OS 3.0

Bluetooth Pairing Problems iPhone

Hi allRecently purchased an iphone 3G not 3GS & assumed that when it came to pairing it with other mobiles that although when searching for the devices it finds them ok I cannot transfer any files or media ?I assumed that as it uses Bluetooth 2.0 EDR like other phones it would pair with no problems & therefore be able to transfer files like all my other phones I have had.I have seen in another of these forums that it is only for use with the supplied headset, is this true ?Any help or suggestions most appreciated eMac Mac OS X (10.3.x) 512 DDR, 120GB HDD, Emprex 16x DVD RW

No Service problem iPhone 3G

Hi, I am from India. I have an iPhone 3G from vodafone. It was working very fine until i noticed that suddenly the signal bars drop from full signal to zero and then it goes in searching mode and ultimately gives no service. There are no issues with sim card and network here because in other mobiles the same simcard works with full signal. I tried to restore the same for about more than 10 times now. Initally it took half an hour for the phone to activate as there is no service, then after activation too the signal drops. Wen you get signal and you make a call or text, the signal drops to no service? Is it some issue with the hardware? Please guide me in this regard. Thanks. HP Compaq nx7300 Windows XP

Chris PC Windows Vista iPhone 3g

All calls show as Unknown iPhone

I have recently got my iphone and have just finished syncing everything from my PC via itunes which appears to have worked. All contacts and calender items have moved across without any problem. The one problem i do have however, is that when I receive a call (regardless of who it is from), the callers ID always comes up as unknown. I have tested this myself with my home phone and other mobiles where I know the caller ID is not turned off but still the contact name and picture doesnt appear. I will visit my local O2 shop tomorrow to see if they have any ideas but thought Id ask on here as well. Any idea? Many thanks Sony

Simply forwarding text messages iPhone 3G

Well downloading the new update, I am slightly peeved that they STILL have not included a FORWARD function on text messages. If it can be done on email, why not texts ? Now I know most of us get the joke texts and send them on, so infact it saves you money, but when i need to forward a number or info, i have to write it down and then compose.also, to forward a contact as a text message, pretty basic function on most mobiles !so, I now need a soloution, anyone got one yet ?thanksDan MBP Mac OS X (10.5.2)

fwd txt reject call snooze reminders iPhone

after several months of having my iphone, and it breaking, I went in to the apple store to speak to an iPhone Genius. The name of his job title, aside from being very arrogant, was far from the truth!!Anyway, he couldnt answer my questions, and suggested i should post them to apple. The iphone either lacks a lot of features which even my first Nokia had, or i just cant find them. Wonder if anyone can help:Forwarding Texts:cant forward a text. This is annoying, as if someone sends me some info in a text i wish to send on, i cant see how to forward, nor how to copy and paste the info into a new txt.Red Button:Wheres the reject call button? If my phone is on the lock screen when it rings, the only option I have is to answer or silence it. Silencing the ringing is no good, as people often hang up before Voicemail kicks in.Snoozing Reminders:if i have a calendar reminder, cant see how you snooze it. Missed loads of appointments and reminders with this one. Very easy to loose the reminders from the screen, and then not see them. There are so many more things that thoroughly disappoint me about this phone - the bluetooth stack, the 3G/GSM implementation, cant change the home screen background from black, cant have your own ringtones - or even set a MP3 song which you have bought on itunes as a ring tone, etc etc. However, these are more annoyances than show stoppers.I hope someone can help with the top three above, or maybe, someone in apple might see this post and suggest to include these rudimentary features that have been present in phones since mobiles went digital in the next software release. Or maybe someone knows a way around these annoyances to make the phone usable, for me, at least. iPhone3G None

SMS Delivery Reports and no MMS why iPhone

I have had my iPhone for a few days and while I love the phones features it seems to be missing a few very basic GSM/3GSM features that are taken for granted on other phones. It feels like a phone that was designed in the vacuum of the US mobile phone market where some of these services have never really gained the same level of widespread use they have in Europe.1) SMS Delivery Reports. There is no option to turn on delivery reports. The phone should be able to do this, it cant be very complicated to implement. For example, the SMS application could display a tick on the messages that have been delivered. This is how its implemented on Sony Ericsson phones and its a very nice way of keeping your SMS messages organised. I find it infuriating that I cant get this service as it ensures that you know that the person has received the message. Otherwise, I could be sending a message to someone who has their phone off etc. SMS isnt like e-mail, you often send quite urgent information and you do need to know that it has been received. 2) Lack of MMS While e-mails great, its not a substitute for MMS messaging. Again, I cant understand why this isnt implemented. Its a STANDARD feature on even the cheapest mobiles in Europe and it means that you can send pictures instantly to other mobile phones without fussing around with email. Basically, not having that feature removes an entire mode of communication with my friends and family. OK, it may not be the norm in the USA but, the US mobile markets quite underdeveloped compared to Europe or Japan in terms of the usage of these kinds of services. MMS is also an industry and GSM standard feature and thus should be available. Its also a revenue stream for network operators, and I am amazed that the European iPhone carriers arent annoyed that its missing from the handsets. The iPhone is a wonderful device, but really it should include all these equally wonderful basic GSM features that are part of the reason that GSM is the worlds dominant mobile phone standard.Perhaps Apple ought to send some R&D people to Europe and Japan and investigate how people really use their mobile phones rather than just assuming that everyones just how it is in California.Even setting up some European and Asian user forums might be an idea, so that people can discuss how they use the phones etc and Apple might learn how to produce a truly great device, rather than one that is sadly lacking in a few areas for no good reason!Surely you should be building on the fantastic system that is GSM/3GSM and adding new features, not removing things that we are all very familiar with and use everyday!! T-Mobile in Germany iPhone 3G

So I was wondering, since they have the iPhone in Germany for T-Mobile customers, can I purchase it off T-mobiles site in Germany and have it sent to the US and still have it work here in the US as it would there?Or what would i have to do?BTW my carrier is T-Mobile, been w/ them for 7 years now.(Since they hit the US.) Excellent Article Disconnect Between Bars Cell Signal By J. Cheng iPhone 3G

Count to fiveMore bars in more places, reads the latest slogan from one of the largest mobile carriers in the US. Its plastered everywhere, from print ads to billboards to TV commercials. At least here in the US, its pounded into our heads early on that bars = signal level = fewer problems overall. And its kind of true. Generally speaking, the number of bars being displayed on your cell phone give a general idea of whether you have a good chance of making a call. However, there are a number of variables that the phone takes into account when figuring out exactly how many bars to show you in the first place, and in fact, those variables can be (and often are) different among cell carriers, manufacturers, or even different devices from the same manufacturer. Put simply, the number of bars displayed on your phone does not necessarily equal signal level; rather, it would be more accurate to say that the bars are correlated with signal level.Under most normal circumstances, the fact that bars are somewhat disconnected from signal level doesnt really matter. Most average people tend to use the same handset for years, and as long as it works, theyre not paying attention to whether one particular phone on one particular carrier displays one more bar than another phone on the same or a different carrier. However, we geeks are not average people (usually). We pay attention to those tiny details, and we use that information to make judgments on how good or how crappy a phone or a carrier really is.The topic of bars and signal strength has recently come to a head with the introduction of the iPhone 3G. Some of you have written into us expressing dissatisfaction with your iPhone 3Gs number of bars when compared to other handsets you have used, only to discover how to put the phone into field test mode and see that its reading the same level of signal that youre used to. Others have complained about experiencing dropped calls while having a full set of bars. As a result, we took a close look at what makes up all the links in the chain that connect signal level with bars, and why bars are not as reliable an indicator as you might think. Heres what we found:Signal, cell towers, and youWireless engineers talk about signal strength in terms of power: dBm, or decibels to the milliwatt. At the very top of a cell tower, signal is transmitted at roughly +43dBm (20 watts) right at the antenna. However, that power diminishes significantly as you move further away, because the power density of a radio frequency (RF) signal in a vacuum follows the inverse square law in free space. Or, to put it in plain English, every time a signal doubles its distance away from the antenna, its power drops by a factor of four. However, cell towers dont really transmit signal in a vacuum. And, on top of that, its being transmitted from an average of 100 to 300 feet above the ground, or 200ft to 5,000ft away, as the crow flies to your phone. Therefore, the problem of dropped power is magnified significantly.By the time a signal transmitted from the tower hits your cell phone, it will be in the µW (microwatt) or nW (nanowatt) range. Since decibels are based on a logarithmic scale (they merely indicate a change between two numbers), the actual power change between 0dBm and 3dBm is a power of two—the same between 3dBm and 6dBm, and so on. A dBm of zero (which is next to impossible unless you suddenly find yourself climbing halfway up a tower) would be one milliwatt of power, and for every 3 dBm going down into the negatives, that power is being cut in half. So, for example, a dBm of -3 is about a half a milliwatt, -6 is a quarter, and so on. Once you get to -90dBm, youve reached the lower threshold of allowable signal level to connect to a tower. You can see the number of dBm youre getting by putting your phone into field test mode. The method for doing this varies by phone and manufacturer, but generally speaking, its not difficult to find with a little digging on the Internet. For the iPhone, for example, entering 3001#12345# will let you enter field test mode and see your numerical signal level. There are a couple of reasons why the user isnt shown these numbers outright, though. For one, this can fluctuate by seemingly huge amounts with relatively little physical movement, which would cause confusion among users. This is due, in part, to a phenomenon called multipath signal fading.A cell tower signal can be reflected by any sort of material that is partially reflective to electromagnetic radiation (i.e., inorganic material, like certain types of stone, metal, glass, or water.) Sometimes, a certain material can absorb a small part of a signal and reflect the rest of it off in another direction; this reflection means that all these signals are bouncing around and taking different physical paths to your cell phones antenna. Different signals taking different paths means that some take longer paths than others. Since they all are traveling at the speed of light, multiple signal paths mean that some signals will arrive at your cell phones antenna at different times. These signals interact with each other, canceling some parts of the signal out and amplifying others. The typical result is that the power density of signals in these multipath environments will fade in and out. In this respect, a typical urban environment plays **** with RF signals. But multipath signal fading isnt the only thing that affects your ability to make clear phone calls.Call qualityIn addition to signal, theres another variable that factors into your cell phones reception: signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). SNR is affected by the environmental interference factors that we just discussed, i.e., how much interference there is in your raw signal, regardless of the strength of the signal. If youre in the downtown area of a city, and signal is bouncing off buildings, or if youre near a large body of water that reflects signal back, this can affect your call quality significantly. These are situations when you might experience fading while making a phone call on what otherwise seems to be a good signal. This signal-to-noise value can be analyzed on the handset, and its used in conjunction with the phones reported signal level to formulate another scaled value—a call quality estimate—that determines the overall status of the phone and whether its okay to connect to a tower. If this number is low enough, the tower wont let you connect, and hopefully, your phone will attempt to find a better tower within range. If the phone cant find a closer tower, then youre completely out of luck, and no tower will let you connect. At this point, most phones display a message like No Signal or No Service, which isnt entirely accurate. Its more like No Usable Signal according to the thresholds specified by the carrier, but that doesnt fit quite as easily into a ten-pixel-wide area in the corner of your screen. This introduces a new conundrum for the cell carriers in charge of these towers. The carriers are able to set a floor for how low the call quality has to be before the tower wont let you connect. If they set the threshold too high, they run the risk of cutting off huge numbers of customers who may be just outside of the preferred range, and those customers will eventually complain about having no signal at their homes or workplaces. At the same time, however, setting the call quality threshold higher will also mean that there will be no dropped calls. The lower and lower this number is set, the more (and farther away) customers will be able to connect to towers to make calls. However, the level of signal and interference at that distance may cause them to have poorer call quality and more dropped calls.Where the bars come inThe five-point scale, known as bars, comes in when the cell phone itself looks at all these values being communicated from the tower and at the thresholds the tower would like the handset to obey. These values are ultimately what the phone and the tower use to determine whether the phone has a good enough chance of 1) connecting to the tower, and 2) maintaining a decent enough connection to conduct a phone call.Note: There are a number of other variables taken into account at this stage, too. For example, your cell phone may be able to hear the tower just fine, but the tower may still have trouble hearing you. Mobile handsets are limited by the FCC to a transmit power of one watt, so the level of signal transmitted back to the tower is minuscule, compared to the 20 watts coming at you (and being diminished greatly as it reaches you) from the tower. This mismatch in signal strength is mitigated slightly by expensive, extremely sensitive receiver antennas at the top of towers.Depending on the lower threshold of call quality on a particular tower, a phone will calculate a score on a scale of 1 to 5 to show the user how likely he or she is to be able to make a phone call. Lets say, for simplicitys sake, that the towers call quality variable is on a scale from 1 to 100, with 1 being the best and 100 being the worst. If the towers lower threshold is 80, and your phone is reading 65, your phone might display two bars, because its near the bottom but not quite there yet. However, if the carriers engineers set the threshold on the tower to a very low 100—that is, theyll allow cell phones with extremely poor signal quality to connect and make a call—a cell phone could still display two bars if its reading something like 90, because its still near the bottom, but not quite there yet.On the carriers side, you can just crank that number all over the place to make the bars go where you want, former RF engineer and current Ars code monkey Clint Ecker points out. This variable lets engineers make the tower more accurately display the quality of the signal, and its clearly in everyones best interest to make sure its as accurate as possible. After all, peoples jobs, raises, and bonuses are dependent upon being able to provide expected levels of service. Still, that variable is capable of being tweaked in ways that misrepresent reality as well.Manufacturers and standards (or the lack thereof)The fullness of your mobiles five-point bar scale is also dependent upon just how much money the devices manufacturer sank into its RF discriminator (the hardware that filters usable signal out of the noisy RF spectrum). Manufacturers who use a more sensitive (and expensive) RF discriminator will be able to use signals that other handsets could never identify. Some handsets are known for having higher-quality discriminators than others. For example, Nokia spends a bit more on the RF front-end to help phones sort out signal and noise, and so Nokia phones tend to have a reputation for high-quality receivers. Other phone makers may spend a little less on the discriminator hardware, and so may not perform as well. The bars scale is also dependent upon firmware from the manufacturer, OS vendor, and radio firmware provider. So the sensitivity of the bar scale, what will force it up or down, and what the baseline is of this variable on your phone is determined entirely by a string of programmers, none of which are following any specific standard for what qualifies as one bar versus two, three, or four. Why the disarray? It turns out that there is no mention of, or even an attempt to specify, anything about bars or how call quality should be displayed to the end user in the GSM specifications. While manufacturers tend to stay within the same general range for each bar of signal, like womens dress sizes, they dont often match up exactly. This means that the value can (and does) vary between manufacturers, phone models, and even different firmware versions on the same model. For example, Apples recently-released iPhone 2.1 software update offers improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display. Notice that this doesnt claim to actually improve signal strength or your ability to make calls on the iPhone. Translated into laymans terms, it means we cranked up the bars for the same level of signal. And that (cranked up bars, anyway) is what users have been noticing, too.Its an artIf youve read to this point in the article, youre pretty well aware that the bar scale is a simplified meter for signal that is dependent upon many different factors, and those factors can vary by carrier, cell towers within each carrier, handset manufacturers, phone models, and software. This is why its next to futile to directly compare two phones by the number of bars being displayed, or to compare the same phone from two different carriers, or even the same phone from the same carrier with different versions of the firmware. But what you should take away from this isnt that bars are completely meaningless. They are, after all, there for a reason, which is to give you a good enough estimate of your ability to make a call. Just take the bars with a (very large) grain of salt when the service you get doesnt seem to match up with what the bars tell you, because the relationship between bars and call quality is much more of an art than a science.Doug Apple User for 30+ Years! Can shed some light on this Replacement iphone activation issue 3G

Im on an orange france contract and recently had a faulty iphone 3g black 16gb replaced by apple. When I put my original sim into the new iphone and connect up to itunes 8 I get the following message:The sim card inserted into this iphone does not appear to be supportedThe iphone is runnning 2.1 firmware. The sim card worked perfectly in my old iphone 3g and works when put into other mobiles.Ive had a replacement SIM card without any luck and have even tried with another brand newunactivated iphone. When i put the sim card in an already activated iphone it works fine. Ive triedrestoring the firmware and tried activating it on other pcs and macs. Does anybody have any ideas? Both orange and apple are completely stumped. Mac mini 1.83ghz Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Technically speaking iPhone

Is the iPhone a True World phone?.......Technically speaking I think the issue is that around Europe and the rest of the world, we obviously use mobiles differently to the US, SMS MMS Bluetooth etc are all used extensively, it appears in the US this is not the case. I see the problem being caused by Apple being a US company research there Home market, but have released it as a World phone??? These complaints will get more as more countries receive the iPhone and find that features that are taken as a given in every other mobile made for the rest of the world is not present on the iPhone! iPhone 3G O2 reception-forget 3G What bunch of CRUD

Im sick of this! I feel like screaming!I had a friend over from Canada this week and I decided to take him on a tour of the city of London. We walked from Westminster bridge all the way around the city and ended up at London bridge. In all it was about 8-10 miles of walking that took all day (we had a few pub stops of course). The O2 reception on my iPhone was NON-Existent. It constantly went from half a bar to full and back again. The 3G & Edge would jump in and out like I was going in and out of a tunnel. It was a sunny day and I was in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world and the iPhone was more of a hinderance than a help. Google maps was even worse. It continually crashed and I had to soft reset the phone a total of 7 times throughout the day. When the GPS did work it lagged so badly it was useless having it on. At one point I managed to walk a quarter of a mile (2 streets) before it caught up. Thank god I knew where I was going. To add to this the battery died by 7pm. Thanks APPLE!Ive been experiencing these same problems since getting the handset on the day of the release...and so has my girlfriend who is currently using her O2 sim back inside her Motorola V3.Ive been a supporter of QUALITY Apple products since being a kid. These past few years have seen a speedy decline in QUALITY and a speed incline in QUANTITY! Apple are banging out products quicker than people can buy them and hoping the UPDATING process will help them ride the storm of difficulties for the following 6-12 months. This IS NOT RIGHT. Apple should have their products tested for longer periods of time instead of letting the public do it for them. I got shafted with the mobileme fiasco and now my £100 upgrade to the iPhone 3G (after paying £250 for the original last year) makes me feel like trying to throw this handset back to Cupertino....or should I say Crapertino! They call the iPhone a PHONE because thats its PRIMARY use. When that doesnt work I wonder why didnt I just keep my old Blackberry. At least I could make calls anywhere in the country. NO PHONE, NO IPHONE. What does the I stand for .....Inept?Inept:AdjectiveHis mother could pitch a wicked fastball, but the iPhone was completely ineptincompetent, unskillful, unskilled, inexpert, amateurish; clumsy, awkward, maladroit, bungling, blundering; unproductive, unsuccessful, ineffectual, not up to scratch; informal ham-handed, ham-fisted, butterfingered, klutzy, all thumbs. antonym competentYes, it does have some amazing features but it doesnt function as it should ...and not by a small margin. I got off a plane yesterday and we were stuck on the tarmac for 40 mins. During this time they allowed us to make calls on our mobiles. A little 10 year old girl had a beaten up pink brick of a phone from 1765 and she had a FULL service with O2. I turned on my iPhone 3G and had NOTHING! At HEATHROW!!!!!!! The guy behind me saw I had an iPhone 3G....he had the old version, also with FULL SERVICE and asked to have a quick look . For the first time ever I told somebody NOT to purchase an Apple product. In fact I urged him not to upgrade. In hindsight I wish Id offered the kid a swap......but I dont believe in being nasty to children!(TO APPLE)- I want my money back and my contract cancelled please.....I wonder if Ill hear back, I doubt it.
