Help with stolen i-phone. iPhone 3G

My i-phone 4 got stolen (gutted!). I do not have any tracking apps installed in my iphone. Is there no way the phone can be traced by the serial number or IMEI number next time the phone is used? (the a..hole has turned off the phone)

Is there a way to remotely install a tracking apps?

There must be some bright individual out there who can do something to help.

This is my first iphone which I bought only couple of months back and was starting to love it. I would really appreciate some help. anything.

Sorry, but if you didn't install a tracking App on your iPhone before you lost it, then there is now no way to do so, and effectively no way to track your iPhone aside from filing a police report.
