retrieving data if its not backed up iphone 4 after phone went into recovery

Im not sure if this is the right group for my question, if its not and someone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.  I have the I phone 4 and needed to upgrade to trhe latest software, i was without a laptop for a few months so havent been able to do it previously.  I downloaded the latest version of itunes connected my phone and proceeded to do the upgrade.  At the beginning it said it was backing up all my data before the upgrade.  I left it to continue and then agreed to upgrade the software.  During the software upgrade there seemed to be a problem with the USB connection (error 1604?) i think.  and the upgrade wasnt successful. and i had to disconnect try different USB ports to get it to connect again, at this point my phone went in to recovery mode and after several attempts to try and get the phone to add the new software eventually it was successful.  My problem now is that the only data back ups ive got are ones from when i have connected to itunes this morning after it erased everything and went back to factory settings.  ALL of my data has now been lost, photos, messages, apps, contacts and im completely gutted.  Is there any possible way to take the iphone back to before the upgrade so i can retrieve everything back? because there is no back ups on itunes except for after it erased everything.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank - You P.S i am a woman and technology isnt a massive strong point although i know the basics if anyone who can help could answer in a way i understand i would be very glad
