Retain iPhone contacts after disabling Exchange contacts sync 3G

I sync contacts between Gmail and my iPhone to keep a single list of all emails, phone numbers, etc. (http://www.google.com/mobile/apple/sync.html)
I will be setting up an Exchange email sync, and because you can only have one sync, I will have to delete the Gmail one.
When I did this a minute ago, ALL contacts were deleted from my phone. I set it up again and resynced them, but I need a way to retain them after getting rid of the first sync.
Anyone know how this is possible?

On your computer, access gMail. Then your contacts.
Look to the top right.
There is an export option.
Export it to a CSV file. Then with computer that has Outlook attached to your exchange account, import them into your address book.
Now sync with Exchange.
