Really poor battery life iPhone 3G

Did all the things recommended by Apple web site to extend battery charge but today , I check my email and after reading and replying to two emails (with no graphics) a full charge goes down to less than 1/4, so cannot do much more until I get it charged back. This is not what I expected. Cant keep operating like that
Any thoughts appreciated

Are you using Exchange/Active Sync? Have you tried deleting and then re-adding your email info?
