i've noticed my iphone 4 needs to have the Home button pushed a lot and it seems to be slowly getting worse. now i have to actively push i in three or four time to get it activated or to go back to the home screen.

 

i assume this is hardware related and that there isn't some magic reset Home button so it works better button...

you're correct.  It is hardware related.  Bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible exchange.

thanks. do you know how this works? i mean, if it is outside of the 1 year warranty do i have anything to go on?

If it's outside your warranty, expect to pay $149 for an out of warranty replacement.
