pre-paid possible iPhone

i am really thinking about buying an iphone and live in australia. I am just wondering if i can put my optus 3G simcard in a iphone 3G and keep it as pre-paid (pay as you go)? And it AT&T american? is it used in aus? I have looked through thousands of discussions and havent got a straight forward answer.

Did you have the iPhone already?
If you dont you will need to purchase it outright for use on pre-paid and be aware they are carrier locked so if you want to use it with an Optus sim you will need to buy it from Optus (I think Optus and Telstra are the only ones offering the iPhone on pre-paid).
The cost of the iPhone is $762.30 for the 8Gb and $847 for the 16Gb
the pre-paid deals are the same as for normal phones but it is imperative that you organise a pre-paid browsing pack for them as they are data hungry.
Note:
Yes AT&T is American and they have very limited presence in Australia
