My son changed his password on his Iphone 3gs today but forgot what he changed it to I have his old password . I tried to backup on Itunes but it said backup unsuccessful corrupt

My son changed his password today on his 3GS (password lock) and can't remember it.  It plugged his phone into Itune to do a backup (I right clicked under device) - it took about 10 minutes saying it was restoring but then got a message saying back unsuccessful/corrupt.  Isn't there an easy way to void the password lock?
