MDCrashReport.exe iPhone 3G

after connecting my iPhone 3G and syncing successfully using iTunes 9.0 and the latest iPhone software, a programme called MDCrashReport.exe launches and bring the CPU to a standstill by taking 99% of processor time.
This behaviour occurs even if the phone is ejected from iTunes and iTunes is closed down. The only way to stop it is to force a quit through task manager.
Has anyone experienced this? What can I do to stop it happening.
