Just upgraded from an original iPhone on Sunday to the iPhone 3g. Last night while setting it all up I noticed that all down the left side between the iPhone casing ad the glass screen, there is light leaking through. I am thinking I could her easily take it back to the apple store for a replacement, however I have reservations about it. I recently had an iPhone replaced under warranty. I believe I received a refurbished one, which was fine because my iPhone was almost a year old and I didnt expect to receive a brand new one. In this case, however, I just got this iPhone two days ago and do not want a refurbished one. What do you think Apple will do, and is this a problem that other people have experienced?

You can do a forum search and find that this has indeed been noticed by others. Many have had them replaced by Apple.
You may get a refurnished iphone, as this is how the warranty replacement works. You have no say-so in whether you get a refurb or not.

If its deemed a manufacturing defect, the Genius Bar will replace it with a new/refurb unit. There is no way to tell whether a service unit is new/refurb.

Yeah Im gonna make an appointment today. I guess my greatest concern about the refurbished iPhone would be the battery. I dont want to get like a year old phone where the battery is near its end. Do they replace the batteries on refurbs?

Refurbs are basically used iPhones that have been restored to a like new state. This would mean that they replaced the battery, outer casings, etc.

Thanks for the thread, I noticed this when I got my iPhone 3G. I will see if Apple will replace my current phone with a refub.
