on my 3Gs , just to the left of the earpeice, i notice 3 circles..sort of in this position

what are they for???
im sure its not a defect, because they look like they are supposed to be there.. but im curious what they are for..

they are the proximity and light sensors.
the proximity and light sensors are used for a lot of things like turning off the screen when you have it up against your face while your talking or to auto dim and auto bright depending on the lighting conditions.
the 3rd circle is the undocumented video camera they are using to watch you. i am just kidding about the camera to watch you.

Those are your ambient light and proximity sensors. They enable the auto-brightness function to work and tun the screen off when the phone is up to your ear to prevent inadvertent presses.
Dont let a case cover them.

On my 3GS they are visible whenever the screen is on (even in daylight) - on my 2G they were only visible in a very dark room and only in an app that used the proximity sensor like phone. Is this normal?
