Issues with not saving notes SMS probs 3G S iphone

A very strange one - upgraded from original iphone to iphone 3g s. Syncd the phone and my old notes transferred to the new phone, great. However when I type in a new note and hit done it returns to the home screen and the note is not saved. I am also having an issue with selective SMSs whereby I can read notes from regular contacts but when someone SMSs me that I dont SMS often, the message appears as an alert but there is no SMS in the inbox and no blog is created. Have tried restoring the phone but no joy. Any ideas? If not what should I do? thanks in advance.
