my iphone 4 lags lot and slow

my iphone 4 tends to lag out and freeze. i dont have many apps and i dont keep alot of safari pages open.

when the screen freezes, i have to lock the screen and unlock. sometimes i have to do it more than once.

as far as the lagging goes, most of the time, i have to wait 1-2 seconds for app to open after pressing it.

it was not this bad before..

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Has any of this been tried?

havent tried that. how do i do it and do i get to keep the previous data?
