iPhone 4 Back-up

I have an iPhone 4 that I need to back up to my laptop. I thought I had done this properly last time, but when my iPhone broke and I checked my laptop I had lost all of my pictures.  So I would like to ask what is the best way to back up an iPhone? I recently had to reimage my laptop, I just downloaded iTunes again and synced up my iPod - now onto backing up the iPhone 4.

Everything on your iphone should be on your computer as all data is not includded in the iphone backup.

 

You should always maintain a backup copy of your computer as well.

 

All pics taken with the iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as with any digital camera.

 

Contacts and calendars ahould be synecd to your computer.

 

Any music purchased on teh iphone should be transferred to your computer.

 

All of these things along with all other content from your computer should be backed up to an external source as always.

Do I just plug the iPhone into the laptop? I need to know exactly what steps I need to take.
