iphone would not respond

Its happened to me twice now in the past couple weeks. When the screen is dark and I push the button, it does not respond. I can push the button and the top button at the same time for reset and nothing happens. To get it to respond, I need to plug it in, but the battery is fully charged. Also, this thing is very slow responding, is that normal.
