Not sure what you mean by "unable to respond to software updates." Certainly it won't update if it won't turn on!!

If your phone won't start, try resetting (no data loss):  Press both home and power buttons for up to 30 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.  If no response, charge with the AC adaptor for 30 minutes and repeat if needed.  If still no respose, there is a hardware failure that needs evaluation by Apple or whoever provides iPhone service in your country.
