iphone not recognized in itunes-help

I recently upgraded to Iphone 4 but no matter what I do, I cannot get itunes to recognise it as a device - it only shows up as a camera.  My computer is running on Windows XP. I have been through the trouble shooting guide and tried everything on the list but still no joy.  I contacted the express lane and spoke to an apple advisor for 1/2 an hour went through a couple of other fixes through  Admin Tools, cameras & scanners and create a new user account however none of this worked and my signal died before we could try anything else - another 3 day wait for a time slot!!  I am not keen on a full system restore.  Is there anything else I can try before I go down that extreme and time consuming route??
