iphone not connecting to computer

Just recently my iphone stopped connecting to the computer. It does not indicate it is charging and does not seem to be recognized because the connection must be bad. Is it a bad connection cord or is there something else going on? I have windows XP. I have the iPhone 4 but have no idea if it is GSM or CDMA.

I just tried diagnostics in iTunes and it did NOT recognize any devices as iPhone and Windows is not recognizing it either. Then as I hit reply to type this the computer chimed and began recognizing the iPhone as it did once before when doing the diagostics. But, it stopped recognizing it again.
