Nothing has happened (i.e. dropped, water etc) to my phone but it has died.  When plugged into the wall an apple logo appears and after sometime the home screen shows with 'activation required' on it.  When I unplug from the wall the phone dies and does not respond to the computer at all.

The battery more than likely needs replacing, since it only works when plugged in. You still have warranty so you are entitled to a free replacement.

thankyou, have made an appointment with apple so I guess they will tell me, it has gone back to the apple logo but I haven't touched it
