Reply Topic I am really a novice when it comes to cell phones. Im going to be traveling to several countries for a few months and want to be able to make and receive calls and use the internet. I understand that GSM is better, and that US carriers offer it, and the iPhone is compatible with it. It would be really nice to be able to plug in (tether) an iPhone to my Mac, but I understand tethering isnt available in the US yet? Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding travel use, which system (GSM etc), and which carrier to use for the iPhone?

You need to call AT&T about international roaming. YOu would need to set up an international roaming plan with AT&T before you leave in order to avoid extremely high roaming rates.
You can also look this up on AT&Ts website.
The iphone is a GSM in can only be used on GSM networks, which is the prevalent network around the world.

2009-10-28 17:30:05 Thanks for the reply. So if I go the GSM route will that mean I am restricted on using the iPhone when returning to the US, or is it just a case of changing some internal to the cell?

The iphone is ONLY GSM. There is no route to take. There are no other choices. You can use no other network but GSM with the iphone.
In addition, the U.S. iphone is carrier locked to AT&T. You cannot activate with anyone else anywhere else.
