iphone 4s wont charge after 10.8 from Macbook pro

My 64g 4s Will not see that it has been pluged in to the usb port on my MBP 15" mid 2009 running 10.8

if I power it off an plug it in I the apple logo is seen indicating that some how it knows it has been plugged in and is turning itself on  but no beep and it is not seen my itunes and if its  screen is manualy turned on there is no charge happening on the 4s.

I plug my new version iPad 64g wifi only in and it chirps charges and is seen in itunes normaly. I have shut down and restarted the 4s several times and no change... any thing else I can try? my closest apple store is a 90 min drive away
