Phone shuts down, has to be plugged in for a few minutes before it can turn on. When turned on battery life shows 65%.

This is most often due to faulty battery. You could try to Restore with iTunes on computer and Set Up as New iPhone at end, to see if this helps. All iPhone 4S have full Warranty, make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.
