Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears. This will usually take 10-20 seconds of holding.

Tried this. the battery will come on with a lighting bolt and outlet cord . not sure what to do .

Charge it for 30 minutes with a wall charger, then repeat the steps holding the buttons.
