iPhone 4 overheating along one side below camera

My iPhone 4 is over heating on the right hand side of the devise (looking at the back of the phone) below the camera when it is charging and in use. It even happens when only one app is open such as the messages. Has anybody had a similar problem and are there any solutions?

The battery is also draining very quickly when it is not on charge and taking a few hours to re-charge once it is drained. I understand this sounds like a battery issue however the devise is overheating on the opposite side to the battery!
