I hope this is in the right area. So my iPhone battery was only lasting a few hours. Personally I think it was iTunes match trying to download in the background but anyway. Apple took me through the necessary steps to restore etc etc which involved hooking my iPhone up to the mac etc. my apple store is 35 miles away so I was told "we need to get you a new phone under the express service". He explained all the details. My new phone works like it should. However, I've just received an email saying the phone had been "abused". Nothing more. And they are charging me £150. Called apple and they said I had broken the dock connector. It was synching and charging fine when I returned it. Now they have my money and my old phone and basically aren't interested in talking to me. Anyone got any pointers? If I've learned anything from this, it's that AppleCare isn't worth paying for. In total, having an iPhone for 2 years has cost me over £400 plus contract. Not happy. Apples attitude was pretty poor too.
Take it up with Apple. If they determine the device was abused it's ultimately between you and Apple to work it out.
Frankly, if the store is only 35 miles away, why didn't you simply take it there to swap it out instead of mailing it to Apple?

Thanks for the sympathy. I simply don't have the time to drive there, park etc for what is essentially a battery issue when I was told it was covered by AppleCare on the phone by apple. my reason for posting this was I was curious if anyone else has had a similar problem. I wasn't particularly interested in retrospective advice but thanks anyway

There's not much anyone here can suggest. Apple has the sole responsibility and authority for evaluation and diagnosis of any problems with a product, and if they determined that the iPhone was damaged, then that voids the warranty. You can try calling Apple support, asking to speak with a Customer Relations representative, and explaining the situation, but if it's your claims versus the technician's evidence, the technician is going to win out in almost all cases. But you can try.

The old AppleCare plan did not cover damage. The new AppleCare+ plan does. Whether in the future you will decide that extended services plans are not worth it is up to you; many people do not feel them to be valuable but many do. You need to understand what any plan covers and does not cover, though.
Regards.
