Iphone 3G S Keyboard for text messgaing not working

I have a new Iphone 3G S, and the keyboard has only certain keys that work in portrait mode and others that work in landscape...all do not work in either mode. It is brand new, I have reset it and this did not help...has anyone else experienced this problem? Please help!

As additional information I cannot get the keyborad to come up unless I am composing a new message or I am in landscape mode, does not matter where I push in the text bubble or send blue bubble nothing works for replying to a text in portrait mode.
