you are confusing GPS with software that uses GPS to give you turn by turn directions. the GPS in the iPhone IS real GPS, it just doesnt have software to do turn by turn directions. unfortunately, you and many others associate GPS with directions. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which is what the iphone does.... it doesnt stand for Global Turn By Turn Directions System
just because it doesnt have the software you want doesnt make it any less of a real GPS....

Apple stated that for the time being they were not letting any turn-by-turn GPS apps on the iPhone.
TomTom has said that it does have a app ready/under-development for the iPhone, but it is unclear as to when and how will it be launched.
There are also some rumors that say Apple is working on its own version of a GPS software, this is unlikely, but still a possibility.
But as of now, there is nothing that can give you turn-by-turn GPS navigation.
